Kregerdoodle Posted September 19, 2009 Posted September 19, 2009 I am getting a "clank" sound from the rear when I leave a stop light, ( has nothing to do with the light) I have greased the splines and the drive shaft thinking this was the problem, that didn`t do it. I am wondering if maybe the swingarm bushings/bearings need greased or re-tourqed.... or if I am looking in the wrong place... I have checked everything for any loose nuts or bolts, grabbed and tried to shake the rear end to see if I could duplicate the sound, no luck. I have noticed that if I stop only using the front brake, that I don`t hear that noise when taking off...Any help would be great!! Thanks, Kbay
royalstarjac Posted September 19, 2009 Posted September 19, 2009 I would check the rear brake caliper and pads. They may be sticking and the clank is the sound of them releasing when you take off.
Kregerdoodle Posted September 19, 2009 Author Posted September 19, 2009 Ok, If they are sticking, how or what do I do to correct that? I put new pads on it about 8 months ago, and have had them off a few times in between for tire change and rear end lube.. Thanks for the in-put... I would check the rear brake caliper and pads. Squidley Posted September 19, 2009 Posted September 19, 2009 Kreg, I would check the bracket that holds the rear caliper on. There is the 12mm bolt that secures it on the front of it to the swing arm, check the caliper bolts also. I have had to tighten a few swingarms, are you also feeling the bike being a little "Loose" while in a curve?
Kregerdoodle Posted September 19, 2009 Author Posted September 19, 2009 Brad, I checked the brake mounts and all bolts, all are tight, It is a bit squirly, but it has been windy, so I wasn`t sure if the wind was just beating me up, or tire preasure or what... so how do I tighten or check the swingarm? I have 20k on it and am sure that nothing has ever been checked by the P.O. Thanks, Kreg Kreg, I would check the bracket that holds the rear caliper on. Squidley Posted September 19, 2009 Posted September 19, 2009 Kreg, I'm not exactly sure of the spot, but follow the swingarm up to it's pivot point, on the right side of the bike there should be a cover over the socket nut. It takes a pretty big hex socket and you have to break loose the jam nut, but thats how you tighten the rear swing arm is at that point. I somewhat do it by feel but there is a torque in the book, I dont have it handy right now. Some whwre at about 40 ft lbs seems to stick out in my head. Give me a call if you need some more assistance...Have a great day and we'll be in TEXAS soon
Kregerdoodle Posted September 19, 2009 Author Posted September 19, 2009 Thanks Brad, I was looking at the torqe specs last night, but am brain dead this morning, but I do think that it is around 40, I`ll look it up again. I hope all is going well for ya`ll, I know what a PITA moving can be, all us sothern folk look forward to ya`ll gettin on down here. Take care, if I end up with a box of parts, I`ll give ya a call!! hillrider Posted September 19, 2009 Posted September 19, 2009 When mine did that, the bolt hold the front of the brake caliper was loose. My bad, I didn't tighten it.
gunboat Posted September 19, 2009 Posted September 19, 2009 ok i'll be heading out that way in a few. don c.
Nighthawk II Posted September 19, 2009 Posted September 19, 2009 Ok, now if you greased the spline and the drive shaft, depending on the order you tightened the bolts might cause the sound. If you tightened the bolts from the rear drive to the drive shaft cover before you tightened the axel bolt you might have an alignment problem.(mine did this) Just loosen the 4 bolts on the drive and the axel bolt, then tighten the axel bolt first then tighten the drive bolts. This will align the gears in the hub with the wheel.
Kregerdoodle Posted September 20, 2009 Author Posted September 20, 2009 hhhmmm good question, I think the 4 acorn nuts got tightened first, then the axel...I will check that out tomorrow... Thanks!!
