Hotrod Posted September 19, 2009 #1 Posted September 19, 2009 I have read most of the threads on swapping antennaes on 2nd generations. I was wondering if anyone has taken their CB to a trucker CB shop to see if they could be boosted like a regular CB for output, clarity and range? I know the range isn't that far and was wondering if it could be increased.
Eddie Fulmer Posted September 19, 2009 #2 Posted September 19, 2009 Word of advice from a 30 year ham radio operator. Don't do it!! Anything they do will have minimal effect.
boominup Posted September 19, 2009 #3 Posted September 19, 2009 I agree with Eddie. Best thing to do is replacing your antenna with a premiun one like a Firestick or the like and also make sure your SWRs are in sync. Mine performs well enough for what I need, like group rides, so I'm leaving well enough alone for now. Brian
massey130 Posted September 19, 2009 #4 Posted September 19, 2009 when driving a cager back in the day, i had a "booster" given to me by a friend for use while driving back n forth from shreveport to Lake Charles. it was great cause i could be head for Mu Mu Mu Miles. i would suspect the draw on the bikes power grid would be mean smokin from something somewhere. a true booter will pull the power, so beware. getting a good antenae with the swr's tuned is good advice already given. dale in La
N3FOL Posted September 19, 2009 #5 Posted September 19, 2009 IMO, to modify the CB unit on the Venture is a waste of money. I am happy with the unit out of the box for short distance communication. Ride safe.

Best thing to do. replace the antenna with a good one. then get someone that has a good SWR meter and have it tuned for the center of the band or the channels you hang on. That's the best you can do to improve a CB. remember that CB is dying, nobody is making quality CB radios anymore. FRS replaced it. In fact most group rides I go on they have FRS, GMRS, and CB frequencies, and most of the sportbikers only have FRS or GMRS. and if you use GMRS you can easily get the 3-4 miles that is needed. Plus the last time I fired up a good CB with a good antenna, there was so much chatter and intermod that it was useless on all 40 channels. so a good antenna will increase your receive range, and that is not always a good thing.
craigatcsi Posted September 19, 2009 #7 Posted September 19, 2009 I would LOVE to be able to just turn mine off completely!!! I don't use it, and doubt I ever will. I have the squelch turned Waaaay up and on channel 7 or such, just so it doesn't come in over my regular radio, but sometimes around trucks, it will suddly 'belch' like someone keying a mike or something and it startles the bejeses out of me!! craigr
N3FOL Posted September 19, 2009 #8 Posted September 19, 2009 I travel the interstates everyday and CB can give me an early bad traffic report I get caught in a slow down or pile up. +1 on getting a new antenna and get it tuned to '1' on the SWR meter or as close as you can get. Ride Safe.

I just hold down the CB button until it shuts off. If this doesn't work on your bike, it is under warranty, make them fix it!!!!

I only turn mine on for group rides and then it is off the rest of the time. I would not torture myself with the squaking.
craigatcsi Posted September 20, 2009 #11 Posted September 20, 2009 I don't think I tried it that way, I thought just cycling thru the Audio Button was the best I could do. I'll give that a try. Thanks, craigr
