distancerider Posted September 17, 2009 #1 Posted September 17, 2009 I'm curious as to what type of loads some of you have ridden the bike with. I understand there are various factors and I don't want to push the safety envelope. I'm 6'5" and 295lbs my wife is 5'3" and normal weight. Yes, to confirm your thoughts, I am scared to ask her weight, much less post it. I have a 06 RSV we have ridden two up and it was great but no trips with luggage yet. I know we are pushing the load capacity. Just wanted your thoughts
jvbailey3 Posted September 17, 2009 #2 Posted September 17, 2009 Well, pushing a bit over 300 myself, and a petite wife of 100-105 range, went to the IR this year loaded for bear, or a weekend with my lovely wife's essentials. The luggage rack hasn't been installed yet otherwise it would have been loaded down too. No problems on the interstate, mountains or backroads. Not saying anything about my wife's stuff - incase she has decide to start lurking. Referring to my weight - lol.
bryan52577 Posted September 17, 2009 #3 Posted September 17, 2009 I am same size as you. Wife is in the 5' 7" and 140 ish catagory. We pull a trailer and have the bags and trunk pretty much full on trips and have NO issues at all. We both love the bike and have never bottomed it out. Run about 35psi in the rear shocks. Hope this helps. Bryan
BigBoyinMS Posted September 17, 2009 #5 Posted September 17, 2009 I'm 5-10 lbs heavier than you and the wife is 'normal' as you say but with 20-30 lbs of 'stuff' we are over the printed load limit but I don't have an issue with it. The bike handles great and will still outrun a new Mercedes 2-up. (I forgot she was back there for a second... but she "reminded" me!)) Part of the reason I'm confident of it is the Kumho car tire that has a 25% higher load limit than the reinforced Avons, etc. I like running the shock at 10% of the total extra weight. (Mine, hers and whatever is in the bags.) Usually around 45lbs.
1BigDog Posted September 17, 2009 #7 Posted September 17, 2009 Kumho Car Tire?? Oh no.....here we go.....
jburrell Posted September 17, 2009 #8 Posted September 17, 2009 Kumho Car Tire?? He's gone to the DARK SIDE!!!!!!!! Yes car tires will fit ont he back of the RSV if you get the correct size.
BigBoyinMS Posted September 17, 2009 #9 Posted September 17, 2009 (edited) Oh no.....here we go..... (Following is my opinion and the opinion of others. Some have differing opinions... but we don't hold it against them. Do some research and form your own opinion.) Yes, a few of us here (and other bike brands and models, too) mount car tires on the rear. Higher load rating, they last an average of 2-3 times longer than cycle tires, better grip and handling and my Kumho cost me about $50. Then there are those that will tell you it is immoral, illegal, illogical and just plain ill to put a car tire on a motorcycle. They will also tell you it can't work, can't handle well, you will crash and burn and you're just a bad person for doing it. But we still do it, we are still safe, healthy and happy and we are called DARKSIDERS! (FYI, there is a Darksiders section here with more info.) http://i720.photobucket.com/albums/ww202/BigBoyinMS/tire.jpg Edited September 17, 2009 by BigBoyinMS

Hmmmm, people already say that about me!!!!!!Im immoral, illegal, illogical, I cant work, I dont handle well, I crash all the time and im a bad person.........And I do have a tire around my mid-section......
MiCarl Posted September 17, 2009 #11 Posted September 17, 2009 Then there are those that will tell you it is immoral, illegal, illogical and just plain ill to put a car tire on a motorcycle. You forgot racist, socialist, unpatriotic and fattening! May cause certain sexual side effects.
PastorPaul Posted September 18, 2009 #12 Posted September 18, 2009 You forgot racist, socialist, unpatriotic and fattening! May cause certain sexual side effects. I have put a nexum ct on my 2002 midnight venture. Now the fastest color is even faster. I have more grip on the road so the power is transfered more efficiently. Yes the Pastor rides the Darkside. As for the wife and I, I am 6'3" and 295 and my wife is 5'6" and 162. When we go on trips I would use half a saddlebag and she would fill the rest and complain that there was not enough room. Had to get a trailer to pull behind and am having Toni's makeup case printed on the back. :rotf:She probably will still complain there isn't enough room for everything she thinks she has to have. LOL
distancerider Posted September 18, 2009 Author #13 Posted September 18, 2009 Well now that I've opened a "can of worms" has anyone tried a car tire and it didin't work??
Freebird Posted September 18, 2009 #14 Posted September 18, 2009 Folks...please take the car tire discussion to the darksider's forum area. Thanks.
distancerider Posted September 18, 2009 Author #15 Posted September 18, 2009 Sorry, didin't know I couldn't ask about it here.
massey130 Posted September 18, 2009 #16 Posted September 18, 2009 Hi Jack thwarted, just in the nick of time.
