timgray Posted September 16, 2009 #1 Posted September 16, 2009 Ok I am running out of options. I got today a used TCI from a great member here and unfortunately it was bad. I cant find any on Ebay and I need one to hopefully finish out this years riding season. I'm going to tear into my Dead TCI as I have nothing to lose and see what is up, but without a schematic or any way to test it in a live working system I'll be shooting in the dark. I heard that an 84 TCI will run an 83 just not perfectly, Oh well it will get me on the road. So if you have a working TCI I'm after it. if you have a DEAD TCI I'd love it for the parts to see if I can fix mine. Thanks guys.
MiCarl Posted September 16, 2009 #2 Posted September 16, 2009 (edited) The 84-89 all used the same TCI. Might as well open up your search...... Edited September 16, 2009 by MiCarl
timgray Posted September 16, 2009 Author #3 Posted September 16, 2009 The 84-90 all used the same TCI. Might as well open up your search...... I was told that they did not. that the 86 up TCI would not have the right settings for the Boost sensor and just overall ran worse than an origional. If I can use any 1st gen TCI that would rock. Can anyone confirm this?
6m459 Posted September 16, 2009 #4 Posted September 16, 2009 Have you considered this option ? [ame=http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=40414]After market TCI[/ame] I am watching this with interest as I had a TCI fail on me earlier this year. Sooner or later these 25 year old TCI's will be unavailable at any price. I think encouraging these Ingnitech guys makes sense. Hope this is of interest. Brian H.
timgray Posted September 16, 2009 Author #5 Posted September 16, 2009 I have considered it, But would rather not spend $225-$250 for one. plus I want to get on the road in the next 2 weeks instead of waiting until mid to late october to get the part. I also have reservations in sending that much money out of the country. With the wife not working $250.00 is a whole lot of money to me right now. I guess if I cant find a good used one, I'll have to give up and save up the money over the winter in hopes that the aftermarket TCI actually works well. I dont like how it does not use the Boost sensor so gas mileage will take a major hit. I do have a question.... the VMAX ignitor/TCI looks identical to outr 1st gen unit.... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/TCI-ignitor-unit-TID14-93-VMAX-1990-07-1-pickup-system_W0QQitemZ150367029808QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMotorcycles_Parts_Accessories?hash=item230292ca30&_trksid=p4506.c0.m245 does anyone have a pinout or know where to get a pinout of a Vmax ignitor/TCI? also is the timing in the Vmax the same as ours? Could this work?
rhncue Posted September 16, 2009 #6 Posted September 16, 2009 I was told that they did not. that the 86 up TCI would not have the right settings for the Boost sensor and just overall ran worse than an origional. If I can use any 1st gen TCI that would rock. Can anyone confirm this? An 83 will only work on an 83. 84 through 89 are the same and will not work on an 83. Dick
Dano Posted September 16, 2009 #7 Posted September 16, 2009 I do have a question.... the VMAX ignitor/TCI looks identical to outr 1st gen unit....QUOTE] This one (3JP) only matches up to a 90-93 Venture with a single pick-up coil. You need one that starts with 41R for the 84-89 Venture. Dan
MiCarl Posted September 16, 2009 #8 Posted September 16, 2009 Re-reading this thread I realize I made a mistake. The 84-89 TCI is the same. The 90 is radically different and definitely will not work. I've corrected my original post.
