Thom Posted September 13, 2009 #1 Posted September 13, 2009 i am installing a mk-1 chin on my mk-2 and it don't fit can anybody tell me how it go's on , pics maybe , is there spacers ? the crash bar on the rite side is off a mk-1 and the chin do's not fit it . Thom
MasterGuns Posted September 13, 2009 #2 Posted September 13, 2009 I think you'll need the engine guards from a MK II. Only the MKII engine guards have the mounts attached.
Snaggletooth Posted September 13, 2009 #3 Posted September 13, 2009 You trying to mount the metal chin or an ABS one?
Snaggletooth Posted September 13, 2009 #5 Posted September 13, 2009 I'm out of it then. I added a chin off an '86 or '87 to my '84 and had to change the crash bars out with one from an '86 for the mounting tabs. I was under the impression that the metal chin mounted up under the crash bar mounts but looking at a pic of Mikes bike it don't look like it. The crash bars off a MKII have the mounting tabs but they don't look like they would line up for the metal one. Sorry can't be of more help. Mike
Thom Posted September 13, 2009 Author #6 Posted September 13, 2009 Thanks Mike , i was thinking the same thing but it is too wide to fit under the crash bars . Thom
Snaggletooth Posted September 13, 2009 #7 Posted September 13, 2009 I'll keep looking through all the pics I have on file. I've got to have something that shows a close up of the chin mounted. I spent a year watching eBay for a good metal chin and finally tripped over an ABS one in great shape and my color. And Cheap! Then I had to find crash bars to work so cheap went out the window. LOL! Ain't changing stuff fun? I'll be watching this one to find out the end of the story. Mike
GigaWhiskey Posted September 13, 2009 #8 Posted September 13, 2009 I believe there are spacers, lemme go check.
Kregerdoodle Posted September 13, 2009 #9 Posted September 13, 2009 Thom, Remove the Radiator cap..... then pull a 2nd Gen under it and replace...problem solved!! LOL Hey, did the tire presure play a role in your handling problem?? I checked my front tire when we got home and it was 10lbs low..... could have contributed to the bad wobble I had... Have a good one, hope you get your chin fixed / replaced... Kreg
barend Posted September 13, 2009 #10 Posted September 13, 2009 The metal chin cowl utilizes the top bolt from the crash bar with a 1'2 inch spacer for the top holes, this is the bolt that threads into the welded on nut; and the bottom holes hold a through bolt with a 1/2 inch spacer. This bolt goes through a welded in hole in the frame between the middle and upper crash bar bolts and has a nwasher/nut on the inside of the frame. you have to reach artound the exhaust to get to it. The tab you see at the upper bolt in pic 1 holds the bottom of the lower fairing. pic 3 shows (kind of) the spacer . All four spacers are the same size
GigaWhiskey Posted September 13, 2009 #11 Posted September 13, 2009 Yup two spacers up top, two on bottom. The top two go through the crash guard on each side. Here are some bad phone pics.

Snaggletooth Posted September 14, 2009 #14 Posted September 14, 2009 That's why I hang around here. Learn something new every day. Just out of curiousity......does the metal MKI chin fit well over the upgrade spin on oil filter adaptor? That's why I added a chin off the MKII to mine. Just to add some protection to the filter body itself,
barend Posted September 14, 2009 #15 Posted September 14, 2009 Haven't had to change the oil quite yet with the spin on, but does not look to be a problem. I'll let you know (:backinmyday:if I remember:confused24:)
Yammer Dan Posted September 14, 2009 #16 Posted September 14, 2009 Thom, Remove the Radiator cap..... then pull a 2nd Gen under it and replace...problem solved!! LOL You do this when you get too old to handle a 1st Gen!!
Snaggletooth Posted September 14, 2009 #17 Posted September 14, 2009 Hey Barend. Thought I saw a flash of orange under there.
GigaWhiskey Posted September 14, 2009 #18 Posted September 14, 2009 From what I remember, you do not have to remove the chin. Wow, must be time to change my oil if I do not remember for sure, lol.
