footsie Posted September 9, 2009 #1 Posted September 9, 2009 I looked but have not found a thread about this. My 04 RSV has started running rough at speed only, idles smooth, and rough is intermediate no all the time. I first noticed it at 11,000 miles, at 75 to 80 mph the bike begins to have a rough vibration. Thought it was tires at first, but then realized it was engine, ran bike up to 90 and pulled clutch in and bike was rolling smooth. Went home and parked bike, the wife said lets ride to Valdosta and eat, got back on and bike was as smooth as ever. On the way bike was rough again, but half way back it just smoothed out. I am going to change plugs tommorrow and put some sea foam in the tank. Any other suggestions Gregg
LilBeaver Posted September 9, 2009 #2 Posted September 9, 2009 Quick thought here... If you plan on running a healthy dose of sea foam I would wait to change the plugs for a few reasons. 1) I have read that sea foam (in large quantities) can cause the plugs to foul... I don't know how valid this is, but it is a thought. 2) If it smooths out after you change the plugs and run the sea foam you will not know for sure what caused the rough running. (unless you can visually see something wrong with the plugs) BUT, plugs and sea foam sounds like a winner in terms of a place to start. I would make a note of which one came out of which cylinder too when you take them out for comparative purposes. The other thing that comes to mind is a coil issue... But I would stick with your plan and see if it smooths out. Good luck.
buddy Posted September 9, 2009 #3 Posted September 9, 2009 last resort check # 3 Coil. I replaced mine not long ago and it runs great:happy34:. seems like #3 coil on some of the Second Gen. are going bad over a period of time.
skydoc_17 Posted September 9, 2009 #4 Posted September 9, 2009 Hey Gregg, While in there changing the plugs, bite the bullet and replace the fuel filter! Once you have it out, cut it open and look at whats inside. If there is a lot of debree then you may have a fuel pump going bad on you. My guess would be the coil but I thought wrong once before and it turned out to be the fuel pump. Earl
footsie Posted September 9, 2009 Author #5 Posted September 9, 2009 Had not thought about the coil, I gonna try the sea foam and plugs first, but I thinking the coil might be it. Thanks for the suggestions. Gregg
