Okay. I've had a Garmin 2730 for a few years now and love it. It has XM which when working is nice to have. But another Garmin antenna has gone bad and I refuse to buy another one. The GPS also has a MP 3 player which I've never used. I think I'd like to put some songs on the MP 3 but have no idea how to go about doing this. I don't want to start paying a dollar a song to download and transfer. Are there really any free download sites that are legit and won't get me in a jam or is that a myth? Also, I've heard of people downloading music CD's to something like an Ipod. Can this also be done to this MP3?

You can use Apple's free iTunes to get songs onto your computer from a CD. Just save them in MP3 format then upload to your MP3 player. There are others of course but that is the one I use on my media centre for playing music.

Publishing music is about making money. Free downloads do not make money for anyone. I am doubtful there are any free music sites that will not have the potential to get you into trouble. There is quite a selection of "free" music on torrent peer to peer sites. If you don't know about torrents, just google "torrents" to get a handle on them.

Thanks Clive. I definitely don't want any free downloads if not legal. Just wondering what's out there. I've never been one to stay up with this stuff so don't know what's available.

Use Windows Media Player to Rip music from CD's. You already paid for the music if you own a purchased CD. Media Player will also let you sync music to your MP3 player.

I have an Apple desk top and HP laptop (Windows). Any idea which would be easier to use to do the transfer?

This depends on the mp3 player.

If you are going to run it through the gps, you probably just put it on a memory card and stick it in the GPS. If this is the case then either would be relatively easy.

If you have to use an interface cable then it will depend on which computer interfaces with the GPS better. My guess is the windows box.

Windows media player is setup to sync to memory cards or things that it recognizes as mp3 players when devices get plugged into it.
