GS51 Posted September 2, 2009 #1 Posted September 2, 2009 No 1 was running very badly the last few times I took her out so pulled the air cleaner off and chacked things out. the piston on #3 carb was not moving at all. after I opened things up I found the piston was apart. Should it come apart like this or should it be just one assembly Has this ever happened to anybody else Any ideas on how to glue it back together short of buying a new one
Snaggletooth Posted September 2, 2009 #2 Posted September 2, 2009 That is called the diaphragm and slider assembly. From the looks of the pic you are probably going to be looking for a replacement. The diaphragm can be replaced on a good slider but it looks like that one has pretty much given up the ghost. Best be taking a real good look at the other three also.
Venturous Randy Posted September 2, 2009 #3 Posted September 2, 2009 You could probably just reassemble it and press the internal sleeve back in place. You might want to put some type of gasket sealer in the metal sleeve to hold in place. I suspect the internal sleeve has been pulled out before when the diaphragm was replaced. Look at the other diaphragms and you can see how they are assembled. What is your history on this bike? RandyA
safetyguy Posted September 2, 2009 #4 Posted September 2, 2009 Free advice (for what it is worth) – I had all four of my slides/diaphragms that came out in pieces. I assembled them back and they ran fine. However to be on the safe side, I bought 4 new slide/diaphragm units from oldbikebarn.com. I rather spend about $260 for 4 news slides than be broken down on the side of the road with slides that fell apart on those “rare” occasions when I see what almost 100 horsepower of V4 power can do. (NOTE: I just looked on oldbikebarn website and they no longer have this part listed, so I would give them a call and check). Just a word of warning, despite what oldbikebarn told me (i.e., 1 week to receive), it took 4 weeks to get my parts since they had to get them off the proverbial slow boat from
Yammer Dan Posted September 2, 2009 #5 Posted September 2, 2009 I have one with a drop of plain old Super Glue that has held for years. Figured I didn't want to take it back apart.
