Guest scarylarry Posted September 1, 2009 #1 Posted September 1, 2009 On the 600 mile service how important do you think to have the dealer do it, or do it yourself, looks like going over bolts and nut and oil change and that is a breeze unless your old like me...Then becomes a challenge.. Also manual does not call for rear drive fluid to be change at 600 I think it better to drop it your thoughts.. Reason I'm asking this I might makea M&E that will put me over if I don't get to it before I leave, i'll be over no more than 200 miles.. I'm a real funny about doing it on time...
Wanderer Posted September 1, 2009 #2 Posted September 1, 2009 A little over won't hurt and they won't say a thing. I had 800 or 850 on mine at first service. I let them do the first and I've been doing it since.
Guest scarylarry Posted September 1, 2009 #3 Posted September 1, 2009 Since the there is nothing really big in it like valves why did you let them do it?
RandyR Posted September 1, 2009 #4 Posted September 1, 2009 I want to be able to invoke my warranty if needed. It helps to have a dealer feel some ownership and be on my side if needed. A little over mileage wise probably isn't going to hurt. But the first oil change & gear oil change is where most of the metal particles get flushed from the system. Plus, tightening all the nuts & bolts that are loose...
Guest scarylarry Posted September 1, 2009 #5 Posted September 1, 2009 My CD mount would not secure the CD player down and Yama did retro fit another one for the 09's, mine is in and I'll ask them about doing it tad bit sooner than 600... Thanks folks
bongobobny Posted September 1, 2009 #6 Posted September 1, 2009 All that is called for at 600 miles is an oil change, and check a few things for adjustment, etc. No real service did mine myself, and as far as the 4000 mile service, there is also mothing major that gets done. My service manager told me just change the oil and dump the rear oil as well, and save myself some money as long as it is running great and there are no abnormal noises. As far as changing the rear end oil well, there will be some metal filings, and it is not necessarily a waqste to do so, but not mandatory. Maybe hold off on the rear end until 1000 miles or so, then agsain at 4000...
Eck Posted September 1, 2009 #7 Posted September 1, 2009 I did mine myself and did everyone of them there after. Two years later radio went out, Dealer didnt hesitate about warrenty issues. About 6 months later the fuel pump went out...Dealer didnt hesitate about any warrenty issues. Rear shock went out, Dealer didnt hesitate about warrenty issues. Doesnt matter who does the first check up........ I would drain and replace the rear gear lube, including greasing the front and rear axle and clean and grease the rear hub pins too. Check all bolts on both sides of rear fender holding rear trunk on. Check bolts on each side bag hinges and both center trunk lid hinges. These are known problem areas with bolts becoming loose. Check the lower chrome piece on front fender for bolts being loose for it will fall off and you will run over it. Same with lower rear fender chrome piece. I would also remove the chrome piece under the windshield and check for any loose screws holding windshield on...

KiteSquid Posted September 1, 2009 #9 Posted September 1, 2009 On the 600 mile service how important do you think to have the dealer do it, or do it yourself, looks like going over bolts and nut and oil change and that is a breeze unless your old like me...Then becomes a challenge.. If you don't challenge yourself, you don't grow!!!!!!! Also manual does not call for rear drive fluid to be change at 600 I think it better to drop it your thoughts.. It is EASY to change the final drive lube!!! Also while you are there, you can drop the rear tire, pull off the final drive and properly lube your drive-shaft splines, spline that connects the final drive to the clutch hub, and the clutch hub drive pins. Use Honda Moly 60. and use it sparingly... I applied it with an Acid Brush from the plumbing department of the hardware store that I cut the bristles off to about 1/4" long. Reason I'm asking this I might makea M&E that will put me over if I don't get to it before I leave, i'll be over no more than 200 miles.. 200 miles is no problem, but you do want to change the final drive gear lube soon, to get the metal shavings out... Look at it in the sun when you drain it....... OOOOOH, shiny. I'm a real funny about doing it on time... me too. BTW use some red locktight on the hinge bolt for your shift lever, or it will fall out!!!!!!
csogbk Posted September 2, 2009 #10 Posted September 2, 2009 Kite you're going to kill me when I make it to your garage, theres a ton of stuff I'd like to learn!!!
Wanderer Posted September 2, 2009 #11 Posted September 2, 2009 Thanks, I need to check my shift lever. That actually did happen to me on a previous bike.
aspen60 Posted September 2, 2009 #12 Posted September 2, 2009 I was going to get the dealer to do the first oil change and he told me it would be 250 to 300 dollars, and I would have to leave it for a week. I went home and started looking at what i would need to do all my service. now I've got my own jack, do all my own service, pick what fluids I want to put in, and two weeks ago i yanked my wheels off and mounted my own tires. I hate to admit it but I like doing my own service (with a little help from this forum) sssshhhhhhhhhh---- don't tell the wife.

I'm not a dummy but the same time not a expert, I wouldn't change the rear tire on 1300T V-star to much aligning on that belt drive and the dealer made it worth my while to do it.. Thanks for the tip and info, I was in your neck of the woods about 3 weeks ago that is where I wanted to burn my bike...I did a 6000 mile run in 2 weeks up around Maine great ride just hard on my azz..
jimsrstd Posted June 26, 2010 #14 Posted June 26, 2010 I just had my 600 mile maintenance done. My dealer changed the differential oil also. Sync'd carbs, changed engine oil, usual inspection, etc. Mine was a new 08 RSTD, so this meant it had been sitting somewhere in a Yamaha warehouse for some time, so I wanted to have them go over everything the first time. Cost me $230. Will definitely be doing my own oil, etc. in the future, though.
