Goo Gone Bad?

I recently removed the front "eyelashes" from the fairing on my RSV. Most people that have done this recomended WD-40 to get rid of the sticky residue. That didn't work. So I went and bought some Goo Gone. I applied it as the directions read and it did no good. Then I decided to apply it and leave it for a few hours and see if it would soak in. That didn't work. I have tried rubbing alcohol, windex, and even at risk of harming the paint I tried acetone. NOTHING IS WORKING! I sat with the fairing on the floor and rubbed until my fingers were raw and only got about an inch clean on one side. HHHEEEELLLLPPPP!!! Short of sanding the paint off, I cannot think of anything else to try.

 

On a plus note the Goo Gone did take the road tar and bugs off the lower fairing. I guess it wans't a total loss.

That's bizarre that that is so difficult to get off. Have you tried mineral spirits? Have you tried a hair dryer or a heat gun?

Denatured Alcohol will remove the sticky stuff without harming the clear coat.

If all else fails try lighter fluid.

I haven't tried mineral spirits but I have tried a heat gun. I heated it until it was too hot to touch and it still was like trying to get hardened bubble gum out of shag carpet.

3m adhesive remover works great and wont harm the paint unless you leave it on for a long time. I use it all the time and you can get it at any auto parts store.

I read a post here lately where someone use Easy Off Oven Cleaner to remove something from their fairing, said it did a great job................Here is the thread related to it............

Acetone probally remove it, however be carefull that it does not desolve ABS plastic......

 

I would use Acetone as a last resort!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Use Goof Off - let it sit for a bit. Soak a little strip of cloth or paper towel if you need to keep it on the glue.

when i took off the emblems from my bike i just stoped at the gas station and filled it and then took a rag diped it in gas and cleened the glue off then went next door to the car wash and washed the bike very easy and quick to gas works and its cheap

That's the way it went when I was trying to remove the emblem on the gas tank Brent. I did everything you tried, and you can see a few marks where I took it off as I had so much trouble. From there, I told myself I'm leaving the rest of the emblem's alone.

Thanks for all the input. I finally got all the residue off. I just kept rubbing and rubbing untill my fingers were bleeding and it is finally all gone. I think I am not going to attempt the tank badging...at least not right now. I will post some pics of the bike when I get everything back together. The fairing really looks great with those chrome pieces gone. It really gives the bike a clean look.

 

By the way, Rich, I am doing all these things to the bike so that when we go riding, I don't accidentally throw my leg over your bike and take off.
