uncledj Posted September 1, 2009 #1 Posted September 1, 2009 I did a few upgrades to my 87 standard, and one of them was to replace the clutches, and double up the clutch spring. It sure is annoying when you have a very respectable amount of horsepower, but can't use it because of slipping clutches. The new clutches and double springs certainly cured that, but now I'm a bit worried that I'll break something else. I tend to like to "play" with the horsepower from time to time, ( when you put the juice to it it'll either smoke the tire or pull the front end ) The initial thrill is over, so I've settled down a bit, but I wonder how strong the driveline is. Just curious. Everything seems fine, but I'd hate to screw up the rear diff, or tranny. campfire12 Posted September 2, 2009 #3 Posted September 2, 2009 Been thinking bout putting a secound set of springs in myself. If you don't mind could you tell me where you got them from with part numbers and price. I've been putting together my winter time work list.. Thanks.
pegscraper Posted September 2, 2009 #4 Posted September 2, 2009 I've heard of V Max boys breaking driveshafts with built up engines, but I think you have to be pretty abusive to do that. I doubt you have much to worry about.
KarlS Posted September 2, 2009 #5 Posted September 2, 2009 I bought my heavy duty clutch springs for $13.62 for a set of 6. They seem to work as good as doubling up two standards. Any place that sells aftermarket bike parts can get them.
Squidley Posted September 3, 2009 #6 Posted September 3, 2009 John, The "springs" on the 1300's is a disc and not individual springs. I personally have never heard of anyone installing 2 stock spring plates on a 1300 engine. I have aways purchased the kit from PCW racing with a new spring plate and removing the half friction disc in the back of the clutch pac with a full one. The PCW kit has a stronger plate that is a harder material with more spring pressure that doesn't fade. I tend to be heavy handed with all my bikes and I have installed the PCW kit into 3 of the 7 Ventures I have owned and been extremely happy with the results. You might want to think about that route instead of doubling up 2 stock plates
jasonm. Posted September 3, 2009 #7 Posted September 3, 2009 YES, on the 1300 many do double up the diaphragm springs...if they pull trailers. BUT it makes the lever pull extremely stiff. I Put 1st gen.1200 pressure plate and center basket like barnett but used my own springs. this was done way before barnett made the Vmax kit. ALSO be aware the clutch often slips because the reservoir is full> YOU want it half full to allow for expansion when the fluid gets warm. Mine slipped at low mileage right after bleeding it. MY FAULT>reservoir full. Clutches usually go to 50k+ before really needing replacement from slippage.
Squeeze Posted September 4, 2009 #8 Posted September 4, 2009 You can't ruin anything inside the Motor or on the Drive Train with a stock 1300c Motor by the Twist of the Grip and not dumping the Clutch. No need to hesitate.
uncledj Posted September 6, 2009 Author #9 Posted September 6, 2009 2000 miles into it, I have no problem at all with the double spring. It is a bit stiffer, but after 15 minutes riding time, I got used to it, and now I don't even notice it. I just got home from a 300 mile ride ( To Cabela's in WV ) and clutch hand is fine. I'm not a small guy though,.. maybe someone with smaller hands wouldn't take to it as well. For what it's worth, I got my clutches and spring from Buckeye Performance. I spoke with ???? (can't remember his name now, but he was very helpful )...and he suggested using both the new and the old spring to give the extra tension. He was right. I have no regrets doubling up the spring. Bike was running a bit rough though. Performance was fine, but something was off just a bit. Couldn't put my finger on it, but that'll be for another day / another thread.
fishrepair Posted October 2, 2009 #10 Posted October 2, 2009 I just read this post the other day about doubling up on the clutch springs. I have a parts bike for my 86 Venture and i went out, took off the clutch spring an put 2 on my 86 trike, Man what a difference. When I get down on it in fourth and fifth gear I look for some place to put it now instead of listening to the clutch slipping.Wow, what a difference. Thank you, Thank you Thank you for this post.
Yammer Dan Posted October 2, 2009 #11 Posted October 2, 2009 I got a (6) spring set and outer plate from the dealer here. When I tried to install the spring I could not compress them enough to get the screws started. Added the washers to mine and it will pick front wheel up. How to install those heavy springs?
