Wimpy Headlight

Although I've had my 99 for five years I've never ridden in the dark in the country until this weekend.I left Cocoa at 5 AM headed for Tampa and I was NOT impressed with the headlight. It looked like I had a kerosene lantern lighting the way.Any ideas on a bulb upgrade?

Thankfully there are several options for an upgrade to the stock bulb. The bulb itself is a H-4 automotive bulb that can be found at most any auto parts and Wal-Mart. I chose one of the brighter "Blue" bulbs that was offered by Sylvania. You can check them out and pick what you think is best for your riding style. :mo money:

I also ride with my high beam on during the day to enhance my visibility to on-coming traffic. The stock lamp is a little weak, and I'm not going to add highway lights, so I will also be checking out some other options.

I just upgraded my headlight with the Silverstar light. It throws out 35% more light than stock. I dont remember if it was an h3 or h4 although on my 99 im pretty sure it was an h3. Just take yours out and match it up.

If you decide to get the Sylvania SilverStar bulb, save yourself some green.... I got mine at WalMart for about half the price compared to AutoZone.

 

It does through a whiter light and more of it. Definitely worth the upgrade. And the best part is, it is a plug-and-play swap. No modifications needed (though I am now considering the tri-bar light replacement, but that it a more involved mod).

I'd check the Voltage on the Bulb prior to shelling out Money. If the Contacts inside the Hi/Low Switch are corroded and dirty, a better Bulb will make them even more hot.

PIAA’s Intense White bulbs are, IMHO, the best deal going for an H4 bulb.

Whatever - I replaced my headlight stock H4 with a brighter H4. It's bright and I can finally see the road at night.

The H4 bulbs are DOT approved. the only DOT requirement for an H4 bulb is the high beam is 60 watts MAX and the low beam is 55 watts maximum. the wattage is power consumption NOT light output, so the standard is kinda antiquated.

 

PIAA also makes some lamps for off road use only....... the disclaimer applies to those lights.
