jeff2053 Posted August 23, 2009 #1 Posted August 23, 2009 I have an 07 rsv bought new in july of 08 had it to the dealer in june of 09 and they said the batery would not charge up past 80%. When they told me that they asked if I keep the battery on a battery tender because the charging systen on the Venture is not designed to increase the charge on the battery just maintain what is there and that I should put it on a battery tender every night. That made no sense to me have any of you ever heard this before? Anyway so I bought a battery tender and have been using it and it never gets past the 80% charge range until about a week ago then it read fully charged. Now today I go out to ride and the battery is dead nothing was left on I did not have it on the tender over night I put it on my regular charger and it was chrged in less than 1 hour. 12 volt 10 amp charge rate. This battery is less than 1 year old and the dealer says its not covered under warranty? When I read through the warranty it seems to me that it should be anybody ever have any experience with this Thank Jeff
BOO Posted August 23, 2009 #2 Posted August 23, 2009 Sorry no experience with the Yamaha battery but the battery was bad or you would not need to charge it up all the time AND that is bull about the bike not being able to increase the charged voltage. If that is the case then the charging system is bad and they need to cover that under warranty. Also you should not charge the battery at the fast rate you did, that is also bad for the battery. Good Luck, BOO

When I read through the warranty it seems to me that it should be anybody ever have any experience with this Thank Jeff First, if you have been charging it at 10 amps you may have ruined the battery.. Lead acid batteries should not be charged at a rate more than 10% their total amp hour rating. Stock battery is only rated for 18Ah. And they aren't very good batteries to start with. The dealer is full of ##it,. The charging system on the Venture is pretty weak and will not handle much added load (ie: if you run passing lamps and heated gear at the same time you will kill the battery) but it will recharge a battery on a stock bike. Now that said, the bike's electronics will slowly drain the battery if the bike just sits. Turning the key off does not disconnect the battery from everything. I bought a second battery for my 07 last summer. I put the tender on the spare battery, if the battery in the bike gets weak from sitting I swap them.
jlh3rd Posted August 24, 2009 #4 Posted August 24, 2009 jeff i purchased an 07 new in oct. ,07.....this past april,09 i too had a battery problem. my bike had about 8500 miles on it.....long story short, the dealer tried to charge the battery after i tried (i used a battery tender and then a 2amp charger)....he couldn't bring it back either.....so he did give me a new battery under warranty......so it can be done.
jeff2053 Posted August 24, 2009 Author #5 Posted August 24, 2009 thanks jlh3rd yhats good to know I'm just not sure what to do its really the first time I had a problem and yesterday I was doing alot of short trips but you know how it goes I don't want to get stranded somewhere.
Steve S Posted August 24, 2009 #6 Posted August 24, 2009 The charging system on the Venture is more than adaquate to completely charge the battery. If a battery will not hold a charge over night, then it is pretty evident that you have a bad battery. (This would apply to ANY lead/acid battery). I have never used a Battery Tender on my bike and the first battery lasted over 4 1/2 years. I often leave my bike sit for more than 30 days while I am at work. My truck sits for the entire month as well and the battery doesn't run down. I would say that you have a dealer that A., doesn't want to help you or B., just doesn't give a squat about his customers. Good luck with it.
jeff2053 Posted August 26, 2009 Author #7 Posted August 26, 2009 well the dealer replaced the battery under warranty. Thanks everyone for your input Jeff
