Gary, it all depeng. if is gasket, then some liquid gaskets can cure leak, but if is housing crack, than i gues you gonna need new pump. Dont know where is pump on 1st gen's but somebody will chime in.

Good Luck.

usually when your pump leaks there is a shaft seal that is going out. Yes you can repair it by putting in a new seal and they are still available from Yamaha. If you still have the plastic impeller now would be a good time to change to the metal one.I am sure there are tech articles on the site here to help you with this.Pumps are in the same place 1st or 2nd gen, right side of the engine.

Hey Gary,

I have seen some people just change the Mechanical Seal (ceramic seal) use the old gaskets and lucked out. If I was doing the job at my "little shop by the creek" for you this is what I would replace to make sure that you NEVER had to do it again! After all these parts are 26+ years old!

These prices are from South Seattle Motorsports, Flatout Motorsports's prices are cheaper and they are closer to you. If you go to your local Yamaha Dealer, plan on paying about 25% more for the parts.

While you are there add the drain plug upgrade and you should be good for years to come!

Hope this helps,

It's only me, but i would just buy a new Water Pump Assy from a 2007 Vmax and undo the black Paint.

Why ??

Because i know of so much Guys which tried to go the cheaper Route and just replace the Parts as Skydoc said. Most of them ended up buying the whole Assembly afterwards and had the new Parts lying around in Closet forever. That's because you're breaking the Casing way to easy when you're not exactly know what your doing.

Why buy a Vmax Water Pump ???

It's much cheaper than the VR Part .... Must be the different Paint or something like that. :bluesbrother: :bluesbrother: :bluesbrother:

P.S. You'll need the Gasket and both O-Ring a the Knee.
