Yes, it can go under the fairing. I've had mine mounted under the fairing (top right side) for 2 years now. The only trouble I have is when heading directly northwest -- the signal cuts out. When I'm riding NW, I simply switch over to MP3s. All other times, it works great under the fairing.

Before I put it under the fairing, I had it on an inspection sticker plate mounted on teh right mirror stem. Here's a thread with pics of that installation: [ame=http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?p=118582#post118582]Garmin Zumo 500 Antenna Mount - VentureRider.Org[/ame]

I use a mount plate especially for XM from Cycle Gadgets that mounts to the top of the resavours (sp) However, in addition to the magnet I added some vecro. I've never lost signal anywhere except a tunnel.

Mines mounted in the fairing as well. The signal is definately not as strong as being mounted outside, but I don't have problems 95% of the time and I like the clean look of not having it on the bars.

I couldn't agree more. Plus the added benefit of having it out of sight from any curious eyes and/or thiefs while parked gives me a little peace of mind.

Having under the fairing may work for those whom do , but what if you wish to put the Zumo in the cage ? I seen another biker place put a mast with plate on his luggage rack . He bought the extension cable and ran it to the rear where he plugs the antenna into . He had 2 flag pole similar to mine with that third mast with the plate on it in the center for the antenna . It looked very clean and it was removable .
