04Midnight Posted August 14, 2009 #1 Posted August 14, 2009 I put in AMSOIL 10w40 instead of the recommended 20w40. Noticed the other day when I saw the container under my work bench. Strange I hadn't noticed before. Got a few 1000km's on it. Should I be concerned?
Tombo Posted August 14, 2009 #2 Posted August 14, 2009 I don't think it will be a problem, as long as the top number is still 40W and you used a high quality oil. But what do I know, I have to use diesel oil in my Harley...
Eck Posted August 14, 2009 #3 Posted August 14, 2009 You will be fine using the 10 weight oil where you live......... it will make it a little easier to start when its cold..but you wont notice it..

I had used Amsoil in my VStar with no probs.. How do you find it in the RSV? Cheers from Halifax
Black Owl Posted August 14, 2009 #5 Posted August 14, 2009 Eh, Salut la.. How do you find it in the RSV? Cheers from Halifax The best way to find it is to check the sight glass. Or you could remove the filler plug and look down. Sorry, I just couldn't resist :duck:
04Midnight Posted August 14, 2009 Author #6 Posted August 14, 2009 The AMSOIL is fine. I'd hate to start another oil thread, but I'm sold on synth and like the AMSOIL but may try the Mobil 1 MXT4 next time because it is probably easier to get (and maybe even cheaper).
660grizz Posted August 14, 2009 #7 Posted August 14, 2009 10w30 or 20w40. Spread is just too wide in 10w40. Better than not changing it though. Not many manufacturers recommending 10w40 anymore.

Its the other way around here.. Amsoil is abundant while the mobil is sooooo hard to find lol 20W40 then it is?
N3FOL Posted August 14, 2009 #9 Posted August 14, 2009 My RSV has always been on 10W40 Valvoline Moto oil aside from what was inside the engine from the time I bought my bike. After reading several threads on what type and weight to use on the 2nd Gen RSVs, I am seriously thinking about Rotella 20W40 or 20W50 dino oil the next time...so far I am not sold yet on the Rotella.
