Numb Knuckles Posted September 19, 2007 #1 Posted September 19, 2007 The shifter bracket portion (lower rear corner) on my 86 left side case broke off leaving the linkage dangling. Anyone know if these can be welded? Is it alum. or magnesium? Or is there a source to by this piece. Thanks, Gary

Curious do you have a Heal toe shifter ? As this seems to be the cause of this type of failure. Brad
Numb Knuckles Posted September 19, 2007 Author #3 Posted September 19, 2007 Yes, it is a heal - toe with floor boards. This isn't standard? Haven't had the bike long. Gary
Numb Knuckles Posted September 19, 2007 Author #4 Posted September 19, 2007 The inside of my oil filter cover is embossed "magnesium", thus the material question. Gary
sarges46 Posted September 19, 2007 #5 Posted September 19, 2007 The heal toe shifter is not standard on 1st gens. And the problem you describe is a known issue because of the heal toe on those bikes. I cannot answer the original question though. Maybe check ebay to see if there is a part to replace it.

cmiles3 Posted September 19, 2007 #7 Posted September 19, 2007 There are some xvz1200 side cases on ebay right now.
Numb Knuckles Posted September 20, 2007 Author #8 Posted September 20, 2007 Could you or someone show me how to find them? I did look, but I'm not too sharp with that kind of stuff. My youngest daughter mistakenly thinks that I know it all, but at 4 yrs old she has not yet discovered the truth. Thank You, Gary
PEIslander Posted September 20, 2007 #9 Posted September 20, 2007 Numb Knuckles, I don't think anyone answered your first question but the case is aluminum and can be welded. A good welder may be able to strenghten it to prevent future breakage but It may be cheaper to just buy a replacement. I'm not sure why the oil filter cover is magnesium but it may need the extra strength/rigidity since its only bolted in the middle.
Gambler Posted September 21, 2007 #10 Posted September 21, 2007 You could also try JB weld, Ive had good luck with this product Gambler
Oldgold Posted October 5, 2007 #11 Posted October 5, 2007 Mine was welded when I bought it, had less than 10,000 miles at the time and yes it has heel / toe shifter. Currently at 76,000, never had a problem since buit the original owner had told me when I bought it.
