dutchman31 Posted August 6, 2009 #1 Posted August 6, 2009 Good day all! Have an 1987 Venture Royal that has not given me really any issues over the years til now. 102,000 km on bike, was caught a few weeks ago with a bike that wouldn't start, and yes battery drained. Installed new stator, tried out and was charging til bike warmed up. Changed the module on frame which I believe is the rectifier? Everyone said this would fix issue. Not! Now my new battery from last spring was replaced. No changes. Still charging and might get an afternoon now without placing back on the charger. I even found the ground on engine, cleaned and rebolted. Even added an extra ground wire from battery to frame. Found a couple red wires going to the rectifier plug kinda wavy but not burnt or corroded? Trying to go on vacation but not being able to get an hour away! Last year went on the Tail of the Dragon and stayed in Pigeon Forge, no issues. Please, can someone help me on this! Jim
6m459 Posted August 7, 2009 #2 Posted August 7, 2009 Installed new stator, tried out and was charging til bike warmed up. What type of stator did you install, OEM or aftermarket? Perhaps your stator is not good at operating temperatures. Got a warranty on it? Might be time to claim on it. Brian H.
Marcarl Posted August 7, 2009 #3 Posted August 7, 2009 Give me a call, Wayne and I just went through the same issue with his 84. Took us 3 weks to figure it all out, now he rides happy. 519.753.6856
dutchman31 Posted August 10, 2009 Author #4 Posted August 10, 2009 Marcarl, Thank You for the help! Checked stator, working great cold and hot. Checked electrical connections under battery, cleaned and added dielectric grease. thought I had it, but upon driving to London, did not. Well, before it got the best of me, I tried cleaning the ground from battery to motor. little better, but not there yet. Installed a 2 gauge batter ground from motor to frame. YAHOO! It works well. Rode over 300kms on Sunday with no issues and always at 14 volts! Well, I'll have to wait til I get another week off to travel, but just wanted you to know, how I fixed it! Thanks again for the help! Hope to meet you sometime! Jim
Marcarl Posted August 11, 2009 #5 Posted August 11, 2009 Good to go, it seems. Glad you got it fixed Carl
6m459 Posted August 11, 2009 #6 Posted August 11, 2009 Installed a 2 gauge batter ground from motor to frame............ I fixed it! Jim Hey Jim, Good work, congrats! Was that a replacement for an existing grounding strap, or did you add an additional one? Thanks, Brian H.
