timgray Posted September 18, 2009 #26 Posted September 18, 2009 There were some NGK kits on ebay for the first gens. I put those on mine a while back. Been good so far. http://www.bobscycle.com/browse.cfm/4,10394.html These I believe are the correct ones.
GigaWhiskey Posted September 18, 2009 #27 Posted September 18, 2009 http://www.bobscycle.com/browse.cfm/4,10394.html These I believe are the correct ones. Those look to be the caps. This looks to be the kit I got - http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Yamaha-Venture-XVZ12-Spark-Plug-Wires-Cables-XVZ1200_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp3286Q2ec0Q2em14QQhashZitem5ad35b83f3QQitemZ390093046771QQptZMotorcyclesQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories
Snaggletooth Posted September 19, 2009 #28 Posted September 19, 2009 You might want to check on adding a headlight modulator. Wasn't there a thread around here on that? If I remember right they are not a good add on as the way the controller picks up the varience and sees it as a problem.
TIMEtoRIDE Posted October 7, 2009 Author #29 Posted October 7, 2009 Thanks to MBrood for walking me thru the ignition pin-out and cleanup. It fires on all 4 now, and if needed, I can do a more complete job later. Why would anyone put all those wire connectors under a battery? I took the plug caps apart for cleaning. Everything got wire brushed. 2 of the carbs flooded and one leaked, so they had to come back off. I thought I was so good I didn't need to bench test my work. Why waste ten minutes, right?? What kind of Space Alien fingers does it take to put the hose back on the airbox !! This thing is FAST ! Smooth, Quiet, and very comfy ! Fresh gas and a 60 mile ride ! Now for fine tuning and plug reads. And to finish assembling the 150 piece fairing !
TIMEtoRIDE Posted March 4, 2010 Author #30 Posted March 4, 2010 This just In- - I found a deal on Craigslist for 2 1984 Ventures for $300 I bought them for $200 !!! One is a titled bike with key, bad 2nd gear, somewhat dismantled. The other is a parts bike, stripped of bodywork. No carbs, 2 seats. Now I am sure I have the parts to finish off my '88 VR Pics soon, maybe ??
Venturous Randy Posted March 4, 2010 #31 Posted March 4, 2010 Check/replace the spark plug caps. Easy to do and I encountered this problem with a friend's 89 having a dead cylinder. RandyA
bongobobny Posted March 4, 2010 #32 Posted March 4, 2010 There was a thread about those 2 bikes. His asking was $300 which was a super deal, but $200, wow!!! You can make a ton of money on fleabay with the parts!! Congratulations! I guess you won't need the side panels from me now...
MiCarl Posted March 4, 2010 #33 Posted March 4, 2010 You're a thief Pete. Glad to see somebody from here got them.
schooter Posted April 21, 2010 #34 Posted April 21, 2010 oh, hai, my name's schooter, nice bike. I like these smile faces see: bye
Pappa Bear Posted April 21, 2010 #35 Posted April 21, 2010 man, you sure have the bug and the enthusiasm to get the job done! welcome to the group! We do like to eat around here also!!!!
84xj1100 Posted April 21, 2010 #36 Posted April 21, 2010 Another welcome from a fellow xj'er...... still own two of them but this venture is the cats a**. I love this bike to pieces, it's quite a step up from the xj in comfort and looks (I think) and I had been waiting for years to get one. If there's anything you need to know about the venture......this site has the answer:clap2:.......it's an awsome group of guys as well. Looks like you've done some work already but don't ever get frustrated.....the engine in this thing is like the xj, "bulletproof" and there are a lot of other similarities as well. Hope you stick around - if you do - don't forget to pay you dues. 12 bucks for the year is a steal:thumbsup: considering getting one question answered could save hundreds at a shop.
jasonm. Posted April 21, 2010 #37 Posted April 21, 2010 I am glad another one is saved. The easiest way to connect the air box hose. Is prior to installing the box, have the hose attached to the box . Get it angle just right. Then use 11" long nose pliers($5 advance auto). Makes this a 5 minute job...if that. Especially with a second pair of hands to help guide the hose. Remember when working with the "box". "Think outside the box".
TIMEtoRIDE Posted April 22, 2010 Author #38 Posted April 22, 2010 Hey, me and Schooter- - we went to separate schools together. . . I'm either going to fix these stupid carbs or take them to a shop. No Pilot action, bike runs great at higher speeds. I even kicked around the idea of a 2 BBL and a common intake. I have some carburetors and a welder.
