Hi! I'm new to this website and also a new owner of an '05 RSV which I'm rebuilding from a salvage bike. I'm down to the last part - passing lamps. I saved the original passing lamp bar and turn signals hoping I could find another damaged one and swap out the parts. I did find an '07 passing lamp/bar but it seems to have different connectors for the turn signals. The old one has some kind of break-off-type cylinder (one of which is broken, of course) that connects the turn signal to the passing lamp above it. The "new" one has more of a solid type cylinder.

 

Does anyone have any idea or experience with what I'm talking about here? I hope I can find the right break-off type cylinder or new adapter to mount the "new" lamp to my old bar or vice versa....

 

I thought all the 2nd generation RSVs had interchangeable parts!...??? I guess since the passing lamps are optional, then there are different configurations and different manufacturers.

 

I don't really want to spend another $300 on a complete passing light set unless I can be assured it has the right connectors for the turn signals. I'd appreciate an assembly drawing if one exists, showing the connector between the turn signal and the passing lamp.:doh:

That surprises me a bit. I am not aware of two different sets from Yamaha. I do remember long ago seeing some in the JC Whitney catalog from some other company but they were as much as the ones from Yamaha and I've never seen them on a bike. Hopefully somebody here will have a better answer for you.

 

Congrats on nearing the completion. I hope to see some pictures of it here soon.

I have the light bar from Yamaha but the lights/turn signals are off a HD. You may have the same thing. Good luck Rod

Got home last night and took the old and new passing lamp/mounts apart and finally was able to put back together. The new mount was slightly bent, but I fixed that with a sledge......chrome is really hard to bend. The only problem I have now is figuring out how to tighten and align the lamps at the same time. The adapter when loosened to adjust the pointing, loosens too much...what a pain in the ***.

 

I'm probably going to rewire the passing lamp to put on a separate fuse and an on/off swithch. As I read yesterday on this site, having the passing lamps and the headlight on the same fuse which is located under the faring is not a good idea.

 

Thank you all for providing the technical support and answering most of my questions before I had to ask. I'm looking forward to my new ride and will probably be in touch.

If you find an easy way to do that, please share it. Only way I've found is with an extra pair of hands.

You know! If you read the directions..... Someone posted the Yamaha Passing Lamps installation instructions on this site and I read them last night. I probably could have eventually figured it out, but saved some time by looking at the directions....dah!

 

Essentially, once you have the lamps mounted on the bike, remove the clamp rings that hold the bulb in the lamp holder. There is a hollow 12 mm sholder bolt that passes out the bottom of the lamp holder. With the 12 mm end wrench tighten this bolt while holding the turn signal connector below the lamp so it will not turn. You want the slot to stay to the rear. Allign the front of each lamp parallel to the main light. Pointing the same direction and then do your final tightening and replace the bulb and the clamp rings. Make sure the clamp ring phillips screw head is on the outside or away from the bike so you can easily tignten. After that, there ain't no more....unless you have to repoint agan because you misaligned the first time..... :grandpa:

You really learn a lot by tearing one of these bikes apart or having to rebuild like I did.

:sign I dont agree: Actually, the faring poped back into shape once it was removed. It had about a 10 inch crack which I reinforced from the rear and used PVC cement to fill in the crack on the outside. Then sanded down and painted. I'm not completely happy with my paint job. The PVC cement is rather rubbery and does not sand well. It left a visible bump where I used it.....if you look really close. I may end up having the whole bike specialty painted to cover up some other nicks and scratches. But, it's good enough for now to get it back on the road. I'll have to save up for a pro paint job.:mo money:
