after talking to some of you guys and listing to talk about warranty i got to thinking way back when i bought the bike june of 08 i didnt receive any paper work on the warranty so i e-mail the place where i bought the bike and this is the response i got from them

Here is the warranty info that you requested , at the time of sale to you we did not transfer the warranty into your name, this was an error on our end. This does not matter however as the warranty is on the bike and not the person. Today, I will have your information added to the owner record at Yamaha so that their records are up to date. When it is updated online I will forward you another copy of your owner registration card.

Thanks

i bought it in KC at RENO"S a real nice bunch to deal with.

No problems with warranty transfers. I bought my '06 last Nove and there was no warranty paperwork transfer done either. When I took it in a few weeks ago for the I-basket, the dealer did the transfer at that time and I didn't have to do anything. In fact, I called about that not long after I got the bike and that's what they told me... "some day, when you're in the shop, we will do it for you, no problem ... no real need to transfer until you actually need a warranty repair".

That is a good, complete, reply from a responsive dealer. If they follow thru as I would expect, you should patranise this facility with as much business as you can. We need to make sure GOOD dealers across this country stay in business. They are our lifeblood when we are on the road.

Thanks for the update.

My friend Gord (noddy) just bought my 05. He and his wife were down in the Black Hills the last two weeks. Before leaving he was having trouble with his cruise...it wouldnt stay on. We determined that the cancel button and gone south.

Anyway, there they were cruising along on their trip and he goes to shift gears and nothing! He looks down and sees the shifter laying on the floor board! Gets stopped and finds a bolt (he didnt know about the "spare") and continues on his way. A little later he goes to shift again....nothing. This time the bolt he put in has sheared off!

Sputters into a dealer....BlackHills motor sports....something like that. Yammy/Kawi dealer.

They fix the bolt and have a look at the cruise cancel switch. Fix that with a little grease.....the spring in it has turn somehow.

Guy a the dealership says 64 bucks. Wow...Gord says thats pretty good and produces credit card. Dealer messes up and only puts in price of 54 bucks...then says aww never mind the other 10. Then he says ...when you get back to Canada go to dealer and submit claim. Gord says....its American bike and Canada wont fix it. Guy says really....looks up the VIN and says well....no charge its still under warranty, have a great time.

Remember that dealer folks.....he's worth a visit. Gord said he also has lots of bikes and at good prices.

I would find a new dealer. And then, advise the Manager of this first dealer why you changed. They took advantage of you.

I think I'd also call Yamaha coz to the best of my knowledge (which is generally limited anywayz) ... there should be no charge for warranty transfer ... basically all they do is advise Yamaha warranty dept who the current owner is.

My owners manual states that I needed to have a warranty transfer inspection done when I bought the bike. Accordingly, I went to the dealer and asked them to perform the inspection. I didn't want there to be any question that I was following the instructions in case I ever needed warranty work.

The dealer was surprised... no one had ever done such a thing. He asked if it was running OK, and when I said it seemed to, that was the end of the inspection. Remember, I'd had the bike about a week when I did this. I had no idea what "running OK" meant.

Then I went to the administration desk to have the warranty information changed to my name. They'd never had anyone ask about this either. But sure enough, there is a process and they did it.

People following the owner's manual is apparently rare.

Edit: there was no charge for any of this.

Well, there are two different issues here:

  1. How we think it SHOULD work (and usually does) vs.
  2. How the printed warranty says it DOES work

IMHO, there should never be any cost to transfer the warranty, nor should it make a bit of difference when it is done - as the first dealer said - the warranty on on the machine for five years, no matter who owns it. And most of us have found this to be exactly what usually happens - you take a used bike in to any Yamaha dealer when you need warranty work done, and they just do it without even commenting on the "transfer."

Unfortunately, the printed warranty says what that unpleasant shop in Waco told you - MUST be inspected within 10 days, and they can charge a "reasonable dealer imposed fee". In fact, it specifically states the warranty will no longer be in effect if that is not done!

Just for reference, I am attaching a copy of the warranty, and it can be found in the back of the owner's manual as well.

SPARE? What spare? Are you saying we should carry a spare bolt?:confused24:

The front bolt in the battery cover on either side of the bike is just a dummy bolt (does not hold on the cover), and it fits perfectly.

And blue locktite will be your friend with this bolt. I had it happen on the Oklahoma Tollway a couple of years ago. That's when I luckily discovered the decorative bolt on the side cover fit prefectly.

Stopped at the next Yamaha dealer on the way and bought a new bolt. Asked the shop guy if I could borrow a little loctite and I was on my way. I now carry an (actually several) extra bolt(s) and a tube of blue loctite in my toolkit all the time. It seems being prepared is the best prevention of ever having a bolt fall off - hasn't happened since.
