Broke throttle cable

1988 Venture Royale. The pull throttle cable on the VR broke at the handlebar pivot.

 

How difficult is it to replace it?

 

Any special tools?

 

Any words of advice?

 

I won't have time to get into it until Tuesday, so any words from you 1st-gen experts will be welcome. Thank you in advance.

I just did mine 2 days ago. It took me (wannabe mechanic) 2 hours, but I've done all the cables once before, and I work a lot slower than I ride. You will have to take off the left side of the fairing...tedious if you haven't done it before, that will take most of the time. Then take off the housing around the right handle grip...starter/cruise control buttons...that is shown in the second picture. To take the old cable out you'll have to start at the bottom end which is at the black plastic box under the fairing on the left side of the bike where all the cables meet up. This is shown at a distance in the first picture just above the cylinder head. Open up that box carefully and keep track of where things go, there is a spring in there that has to be put back in very precisely. If you are just doing one cable see if you can leave the rest of them in their spots. When the bottom end is released, pull the cable out, watch its routing. Once the cable is out, you have to whip it around as you unthread it at the handle bar end. To put the new one back on, you have to start at the top end by whipping the cable around to thread it on the handle bar housing. Then route the cable through to the black plastic box and hook it in. Put the box back together carefully. Once the box is screwed back together, and the handle bar housing is buttoned up, make sure you test the grip action. I'd even start the bike to make sure it's all working properly. It is a total waste of time to have to undo the fairing a second time to fix it. When it's working good, put the fairing back together. As far as I can recall, about the only tool you need for this whole job is a philips screwdriver.

Hi Nick I just posted you an answer over on VenturNet.Swifty gives a good writeup the only thing I would add is the advise to do the short return cable between the box and the cards at the same time.They fray very badly and then break somewhere between 40K and 65K.If yours hasn't yet and you have more miles then that I'd say you are on borrowed time.Good luck

If it broke at where the barrel fits on, just take it to a bicycle shop and have them to fix the cable. I have done this several times in the last 40 years.

Hey guys, where did you get the new throttle cable? Supposedly there are several cables because it goes through the cruise control. Also, supposedly the dealer doesn't have them anymore. Any help would be appreciated
