bugfish69 Posted July 22, 2009 #1 Posted July 22, 2009 Can the front brake pads be checked without taking the calipers off or apart? I don't know exactly what I am looking at or for. Is there a measuremet that would indicate the pads need replacement? Thanks, Jim
stroker ace Posted July 22, 2009 #2 Posted July 22, 2009 You can visually see part of the pad from the top and bottom of caliper. As long as you can see pad ( brake material ) between rotor and backing plate of pad you should be ok ? The pads are around 3/16 thick when new. My opinion hope this helps.
midnightventure Posted July 22, 2009 #3 Posted July 22, 2009 They usually have a strip of missing material in the center. When it wears down close to being even with that strip they need to be replaced.
GeorgeS Posted July 23, 2009 #4 Posted July 23, 2009 If they are over 50 percent worn, order new one's and keep them on hand ready to install. I always have a spare set in the tool box. 15 to 20 K is about average life span for front pads. also, don't expect both sides to be worn the same amount. That depends on how you use your brakes.
