Cougar Posted July 12, 2009 #1 Posted July 12, 2009 (Any Idea's ) After my conversion, the first few weeks my top end power was there, I now have over 1500 miles on since then and loving every minute of it, I will never go back! , but what has happened or is it my Imagination? If I kick it into 5th gear I lose my top-end power range. I have changed plugs / air filters etc. still the same. I know that I now have an extra 300 pounds but As I get up into the higher range or up a hill I can not seem to go over 65 mph , it is like horse power is maxed out . In the lower gears ( 1/2/3 and a bit of 4th) I can get the RPM's up really high. any idea's? or am I just getting old? *lol* On Another note: when we had 2 wheels and pulled our trailer I was pulling 300 more pounds and all was OK, and a passenger. Jeff
SteveW Posted July 12, 2009 #2 Posted July 12, 2009 Hi Jeff I had the same thing with my sidecar. I ended up replacing my rear coils with some I got off of ebay. It seems one of the rear coils was breaking down under load when hot. The plugs all looked good when I changed them but in 5th gear under 70 the power just wasn't there. Since the switch I can drop into 5th gear at 50 with out a problem. Steve
Cougar Posted July 12, 2009 Author #3 Posted July 12, 2009 REALLY! no kidding.. so wear are these rear coils and how can I test them? can't remember were they were? WOW what a great find.. also , you said ONE? how did you know what one? very COOL! SO I AM NOT CRAZY? Jeff
SteveW Posted July 12, 2009 #4 Posted July 12, 2009 Hi Jeff My coils i took out tested Ok when I tested them with a volt meter. ( they were cold ) I got the used ones on ebay 4 for 39.00 from pinwheel cycles. I got my 05 used with 19,000 miles on it and it never felt right since I got it. ( power wise ). my 99 never felt this way. The rear coils are located between the battery and the rear of the engine. I took off the 2 rear side covers above the rider floor boards and the middle piece between them. I took out the coolant overflow tank and then you can see them. ( just follow the plug wires ). You have to work from the top and from under the bike to remove them. Leave the bracket that holds them and just unbolt them from it. While you have the overflow tank out its a good time to clean it and replace the fuel filter. My guess is when the coils got hot they would break down and not give off the proper spark. The bike ran fine when first taken out but within a few miles became slugish in 5th gear. It worked for me and not it runs like my 99 did. It will still bog down some if you put it in 5th below 50 but before I changed the coils it would bog down if I was doing 80 and put it in 5th gear. I replaced both rear coils because I was there and why replace only one. I think it a bad place to install coils. to much heat from the engine and to open to water from the rode in the rain. It took me about an hour to change them out. Hope this helps. Steve
Cougar Posted July 12, 2009 Author #5 Posted July 12, 2009 Thanks Much Steve. I will look into that... What made you think it was the rears? and not the fronts? Also, how the heck are you healing up? Jeff
SteveW Posted July 12, 2009 #6 Posted July 12, 2009 I'm doing great the hip and knee are like new and I haven't felt this good in years. A few of the guys have had a bad #3 coil Rt. rear so I thought I would start with the rear coils and see what happened. Also the rear coils are the ones that get all the heat and ex-poser. I have thought about taking the hack off now that I'm all healed up but I like it to much to do that. LOL I picked up a 82 750 Maxim that I rebuilt and ride it when I want to ride a 2 wheeler. Steve
Cougar Posted July 12, 2009 Author #7 Posted July 12, 2009 Great News on the healing.. Yep, Me to! ,,, I picked up an 81 GL 1100 that I am restoring to Naked / doing the full-on carb rebuild this week. Hey, would you mind if I called you today? If your not to busy , just for a couple Min's. Oh BTW just found a few coils on pinwall for $24.95 Jeff
SteveW Posted July 12, 2009 #8 Posted July 12, 2009 Sure Jeff give me a shout I'm doing nothing right now 770-630-0973
Cougar Posted July 15, 2009 Author #9 Posted July 15, 2009 UPDATE: WORKS LIKE IT SHOULD NOW !!!! :-) was the in-ward #3 coil , changed out with some 2002 coils and WHAMO! POWER! I like when things go right for a change !! I even have another set coming as well. so for sure it will never happen again! *LOL* maybe my fuel mileage will get better as well. Jeff
Cougar Posted July 15, 2009 Author #10 Posted July 15, 2009 And... what a lousy place to put a set of coils... sheesh.. all the HEAT/WATER/ ELEMENTS etc. go onto those rear coils. I did add some di-electric grease to the post this time. and who thought of placing the connecting wires toward the bottom of these rear coils? Brilliant! http://www.venturers.org/Forum/images/smiles/icon_rolleyes.gif Jeff
