arnesbay Posted July 11, 2009 #1 Posted July 11, 2009 Purchased another RSV(1999) and just got it on the road. I was wonder if anyone has the sound that my bike makes. Here is the sound as best I can describe. It is a deep whump whump sound. At first it reminded me of a head gasket leak type of sound. But there are non. It seems to come from the lower front of the motor. None of the mechanics that have worked on the bike have said anything. Motor head son-in-law said it sounded like the cam. Bike runs great just sounds different to me. I have put almost a thousand miles on this bike and want to know if anyone has had similar sounds or issues. Have planned 4000 mile trip this year. Should I be concerned?????
BOO Posted July 12, 2009 #2 Posted July 12, 2009 Well I usually relate "whump whump" sounds to tires. If you have a low tire sometimes it will make that sound especially if the bike has been sitting for some time. It sounds like maybe your "whump whump" is a faster "whump whump" than the tire type "whump whump" leading you to belive it's motor related. I'm pretty sure this post didn't help but I just hate to see a post go unanswered. BOO
Kregerdoodle Posted July 12, 2009 #3 Posted July 12, 2009 hhhmmmmm well I wonder "Wump" it is ????? Sorry had to do it, I have no Idea myself, but some one will come along and help ya out..good luck and tell us what you find..
SilvrT Posted July 12, 2009 #4 Posted July 12, 2009 are you sure it's the Yammie V-4 in it and not a HD V-twin?
slick97spirit Posted July 12, 2009 #5 Posted July 12, 2009 Mine makes a sound similar to what your describing and I've pretty much attributed it to wind buffeting over the lower cowlings. The only time I hear it is at certain speeds. Hard to say if it's the same sound. Hope this helps.
GeorgeS Posted July 12, 2009 #6 Posted July 12, 2009 I guess I would suspect the front tire also. Give it a close examination. Is it a Bridgestone? If so, get rid of it. Also, inspect the brake pads, are they wearing even ?? Possibly a defective brake rotor-- Check the brake calipers for sticking pucks !! make sure they are all releasing. How many miles on the bike?? Might be a wheel bearing problem. Is there any greese left in the wheel bearings ?
Condor Posted July 12, 2009 #7 Posted July 12, 2009 A 'Whomp' is pretty generic. Could even be a seperated cap on the front tire?? Engine noises are usually rattle, clank, ping, knock, etc.

Should I be concerned????? It is definitely a motor sound and not tire, brake or wheel sound. It also speeds up as the rpm's build. Has a deeper sound than the norm. Don't you just hate it when someone tries to describe a sound?? Everybody's description sounds different.
Squidley Posted July 12, 2009 #9 Posted July 12, 2009 I have heard what I believe is your sound before, matter of fact yesterday on an '07. I'm thinking it might be the clutch basket, but unfortunately it's a tone thing that really narrows it down. Hard to say for sure without really being able to hear it. How long has it been since your last oil change and are yop running dead dinosaurs or synthetics?

How long has it been since your last oil change and are yop running dead dinosaurs or synthetics? Synthetic Amsoil 10W-40W 800 miles ago. I don't think it's the clutch basket as I've changed 2 out on other ventures and it doesn't resemble that sound. Almost sounds cylinder like to me. But I'm no motor guy. After this weekend I have 1000 mile since putting on the road 4 weeks ago. No apparent issues so I guess I'll just run it till something gives or not.
