2000 MM RSV Carb boots

Just prior to leaving for Knoxville last w/e I noticed that a couple of my carb boots are cracked. I read in a similar post that they have a metal sleeve inside of them. Is this correct? If that is the case, do I not need to worry about the cracks or do I need to replace them? If so, where's the best place to get them other than the dealership? I don't relish the thought of tackling this one. It doesn't look fun. Any help, ideas, recommendations would be appreciated.

On my first RSV they were severely cracked and I thought that they just had to be leaking. But, I sprayed some carb cleaner around them while it was idling, no change in rpm or sound. So, they weren't sucking anything in. That's what I'd suggest you try as a test. If the rpm's don't increase, they aren't cracked all the way through.

I'll give that a try.

Before Naked Rider and I rode up to St. Charles I had changed my plugs and my mileage jumped to 42 mpg.

Just recently it has dropped back down to 38 & I was wondering if the cracks could be the cause.

Maybe I need to check the coils as I've heard that one of them is bad about going out.

The metal casting inside only goes up about halfway, and that's where the worst cracks appear. But they have to be really really bad to actually draw air and cause any problems. A dealer is the only place you'll find new ones.

NAPA has it in a spray. But it also comes in a liquid with a brush at Harbor freight. To use spray you are going to have to take them off. Liquid you could reach in thee and coat cracked area. Give it plenty of time to dry.You don't want to suck it into intake.

 

I used it on 1st Gen boots. worked great.
