The audio system on my 99 just doesn't seem to have enough power through the headsets. I have some of the mid-range (pricewise) J & M headsets, and with the IC at it's highest setting we sometimes struggle to hear each other. In addition, the radio volume seems weak also. At full volume it is still none too loud. I am running Road King pipes, so the exhaust volume isn't the problem.

It does seem that the CB has plenty of volume....it'll blow my ears out. Just seems like the audio system doesn't have enough output power.

Is this typical of the RSV's? Oh....I forgot to add that when I am playing MP3's through my GPS's player function I can get plenty of volume. Of course, the GPS has a volume control for the output so I can crank it up.

One more thing......does the IC on the RSV really NOT have a VOX control? I can't find it if it does....

That seems incredible that an IC system would not include a VOX adjustment.

Thanks,

This is not a typical complaint for the RSV audio system. My radio is plenty loud at 10-12, and even when I am REALLY blasting some classic metal, like Cream or Led Zepplin. I don't think I ever want it over 18. Your model of headsets should be fine too. It is hard to compare the volume of anything connected to the Aux inputs since there is no way of knowing how strong that input signal is relative to the rest of the integrated audio. In general, CB audio settings should be close to radio audio for similar volume.

Not sure what to advise - you may have an antenna problem. Maybe check the white noise between stations on the AM band - it won't be muted like the FM bands, and it probably would not be reduced by a bad antenna. If AM noise is loud but FM is down, then I'd focus on the antenna first. I think it has a normal antenna plug in the cable inside the fairing, so you can plug in any other car antenna for a test.

The IC mic is hot all the time. For my wife and I, 10-12 on IC is also plenty loud. But we wear full helmets all the time, so I'm sure that helps. A common problem for people who have trouble with IC volume is having themic turned the wrong way or not close enough to the lips.

Hope you get it figured out,

On our last ride, we checked the direction of the mics before we left just to make sure that they were correct. We both also put the foam cover up to where it is almost touching our lips....still pretty low volume. I crank it clear to the max setting, and we both have to speak really loud to be heard. Not shouting, but right next to it.

If I understand what you are saying about checking the antenna, I should tune to an empty AM channel and see how much "white noise" there is, correct? And if there is a lot of such noise then I should try another antenna to see if that makes a diff? Good place to start if I am understanding correctly.

Thanks,

Yes, you understand correctly. Personally, I'd just start by splitting the fairing and plugging in a new antenna for a test, but if you don't want to go to all that work, then testing for noise on the AM band is a first step that takes no tools.

But frankly, I don't have a lot of hope it is the antenna if your IC is too low also. Maybe the best step would be to find someone else with an RSV that will let you compare your audio with his. That might be the easiest way to verify you have all the settings correct. Just putting on the helmet and blowing into the mike (or tapping on it with your fingers) should be all the test you need to compare how loud it is). :080402gudl_prv:

Freezy,

I typically have to have my IC setting at 16 with a 3/4 helmet. I use the chatter box headsets. What I have found is that when using the h/s I have to adjust the tenor setting to -3 and increase the bass setting to +3 to improve the sound. Then if I go to the speakers I have to reverse both settings.

If using my IPod I turn the IPod volume all the way up and then use the volume control to adjust to the proper level. I get the best sound from the IPod. The h/s always sound tinny to me.

Hey Ken, thanks for the info, I'll try those settings and see what happens.

How is the volume on your intercom? Or do you use it at all?

I use it alot but have to set it at about 16 or 17. At 17 it works fine, but I will get feedback (ear piercing) if I turn the bars all the way to the left. I guess the control unit comes too close to other electrical stuff under the tank. If there is alot of wind noise I'll turn it up, then turn it back down if I pull in some where where I may have to make a tight turn. Kind of a pain, but I just put up with it.

I sure think you have a problem unless you and your wife are just hard hearing. I don't hear very well at all in my left ear, right is fair but we do fine with the intercom set on about 14 with our open face helmets.

Well, my hearing isn't the greatest in the world, but the wife has great hearing. And it still is weak for her too.

Would you think that my audio controller is going bad? Or could it be related to the connections?

No mic mutes or splitter that I know of.....looks like the fairing will be coming off this weekend to start checking connections, etc.

Hey, I'm getting GOOD at r&r the fairing!
