In May of 1999, I bought my brand new Royal Star Venture. I put about 35,000 miles on it pretty quickly but then about 6 or 7 years ago, ran across another '99 model down in Southern Ohio that only had 5,000 miles on it. The price was about the same as I knew I could sell mine for so I bought it, moved all my accessories and etc. over to the new one and then sold my original on Ebay. The new one was the same color and etc. so it was like I hadn't even changed bikes except for the mileage.

So this weekend I was looking through some papers and came upon the title for my bike. You can imagine how surprised I was to notice that I had never transferred it into my name. :sign07: It was one of those things where I thought my wife and done it and she assumed that I had done it and it just didn't get done. I still received my registration notice every year from the previous '99 so I always just renewed the plates and kept on going. The problem was, the plates were actually assigned to the VIN number of the old bike.

I guess I've been lucky because I've never been stopped so there has been no reason for them to run the VIN number against the plates. I DID change the insurance when I traded so my insurance was on the correct bike.

So, yesterday morning I stopped by the BMV and finally transferred the title to my name. So, I guess I FINALLY own the bike that I've been riding for 6 or 7 years. :)

thats not bad, every winter I would repaint the bike a differnt color. each spring I'd go back to MV, and chance the color code on the bike, which was free. by the third year, they knew my name, and asked what color it was now. I had the bike 8 years, and 7 differents colors changes.

(Had nothing to do in the winter time in Elizabeth New Jeresy)

I purchased a new 66 Triumph Bonneville but did not like the white with orange stripe, so I had it painted black. Things went well until I was stopped in another state for a traffic ticket, then when they found the colors did not match the registration I spent a weekend in an Iowa county jail until they cleared it up on a Monday.

Not much fun for a weekend meant to chase girls and party.

Here in my home state in Australia, the powers-to-be don't worry about motor cycle colours being described on rego papers. Different matter for tin-tops though.

You can re-paint your bike all you like here and nobody gives a tinker's cuss!

Eck, I was really surprised but there was no penalty. I expected to get slammed but apparently there is no penalty in Ohio. I DID have to pay the sales tax on what I paid for it back when though. There was no fudging either because the previous owner had filled out the selling price on the back of the title. I tried to tell the lady that the bike was no longer worth that but she just laughed at me...imagine that. :)

Your lucky for sure Freebird.

I got lucky myself when I bought my GW, side car body and trailer together.

We drew up a bill of sale, I paid him and came back to Huntsville.

About three days later I went to get plates and realized then that the bill of sale only addressed the bike and the bikes vin number and amount I paid.

However, the amount I paid was for all three items and the trailer also has a vin number, (side car body does not).

After I explained to the lady that I bought all three items at once, I really thought she was going to tell me to go back to the guy I bought it from and get another Bill of Sale.

She asked her supervisor what she should do, and her supervisor said go ahead and give him plates for both...

Man I wanted to hug that lady........

Don, look close at your receipt or you may have got lucky. Here in Cincinnati BMV will charge you a $ 5.00 penalty if the title is not transfered within 30 days. That should be statewide as we all go through Columbus.

You know those pictures you get in the mail with your vehicle in the middle of an intersection and there is a dollar amount you "owe"..and must be paid...

Well Don may be getting a photo of his title in the mail with a $5.00 fee (per month) that it was not transfered......

Moped is exactly right...I just looked at the receipt and there is a $5.00 late fee on it. Oh well....that doesn't seem excessive since it was about 6 years late. :)

So I'm wondering. The guy that bought your old '99. What's he doing if you've been picking up the yearly registration fees?? He must not be getting the annual bill, and running around with expired tags??? Around here the annual bill will stop once the title has been changed over to the new owner...
