the wife & I were on our way home from northern florida last week. we throught, the floation feeling we were getting, was from the wind, cutting across the bike, and wet roads, we were pulling the trailer.

last night we went for another ride, and on the way home the bike did it again, this time without the trailer. can wind make the front end feel like its floating. weird feeling.

talk to me tech. peoples, or should I be looking for something loose?

Sometimes when the road gets hollowed out by big rigs you will get this funny handling feeling. Basically the tires want to stay in the hollow or lower portion of the road, and resists attempts to get it to climb the side of the dip.

Several things can cause that feeling. Low tire pressure, cupped tires, and steering head bearings being loose.

My money is on the steering head bearings. Usually they need an initial tightening between 10,000 and 15,000 miles. If the bike wants to follow the cracks in the highway (giving you that floating feeling) then they need to be tightened. Here is the tech article.

Not hard to do at all.

If you go to the dealer it will cost you since it is not covered by the warranty. If they go by the book, you will pay dearly for the work because it requires taking the front fairing completely off, electrical and all. Our way is much simpler and takes about 10 minutes.

Im my experience, the floating feeling came from when I was riding on very smooth patched areas of pavement (tar'd areas) like when riding on the yellow or white lines.

Being that you have an 07 model and did not mention how many miles you may have on your tires, they too could be an issue. You would have to check them for tread depth, and basic normal signs of wear.

If your tires tread is worn down you will get that floating or uncontrolable feeling.

If the air pressure in your tires is to low you could get the same feeling

If the wheel bearings are worn /going bad, you could experience the same feeling

(unlikely the wheel bearing bushings are worn out, but it is possible)

If the swing arm bushings are getting worn you could feel the same floating

(unlikely the swing arm bushings are worn out, but it is possible).

Did you check your handle bar neck bearings for proper adjustment?

They could be loose and causing the floating feeling.

one the picture FreeBird has before tighting, is what mine look like.

Two: the left lower fairing is loose, tightened that down with allen wreches

tires are 3/4 worn away. about 10 thousand miles on them.

bike has 34,400.00 miles on it, and has never been touched

when the bike is on its stand, the handlebars always, move the tire to the left to its stops, without touching it.

I lifted the bike this morning, and just spone (?) the front wheel, and it stop asap. the teck, pulled the wheel off, and sure enough, the front wheel bearing are going.

bikes back home, will get replaced, alone with the rear tire Plus the Honda Moly grease (Thanks Guys) & back brakes next week.
