How do I know what is covered under the 5 year warranty and what isn't? My 05 RSTD is still under warranty (finally got my dealer to figure out it does indeed have a 5 year manufacturers warranty) and I THINK I have a front fork seal leaking. The manager claims that he called Yamaha and they told him that a fork seal is not covered under the warranty. Would like to call bull, but need some ammo.

Also, would a leaking fork seal hold air?

Just my guess but I'd think such things as fork seals are not covered under a warranty ... similar to brake pads ... they are a "general wear and tear" maintenance item. Perhaps if the fork seals started leaking within the first year...??

Oil seals are absolutely covered under warranty! EVERYTHING is covered under warranty unless the owner's manual specifically identifies it as a normal wear item. Force the dealer to pull the warranty and show you where it has any exclusions. The Magnason Moss Warranty act specifically prohibits a manufacturer from playing those games and provides for them to pay your legal fees if you need to force them to honor the printed warranty.

Claiming oil seals are not covered due to wear is about the same as trying to claim piston rings are not covered due to wear!

You got a copy of the warranty with your bike, but I have attached a PDF version.

I have and 07 venture the rear wheel bearings went out at 37,000 miles and the dealer or Yamaha would not cover them said a wear item.

It is a real shame that you got cheated like that, but if you accepted it, well, I guess you found it OK. Each of us has to make our own decisions.

All I can add is that maybe anyone with a problem should ask themselves (and a lawyer) just what they expect from a five-year unlimited mileage warranty? If someone is gonna just bend over and take it for bad wheel bearings, then I guess they won't expect anything to be repaired? I only hope that other readers don't just decide to lay down and be cheated because a few other owners found that acceptable from a dishonest dealer.

For those that actually care about their rights, the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act in the US protects you, and it ensures that it will NOT cost you anything to force the manufacturer to honor the warranty. I have NEVER had to hire a lawyer to sue for my rights, but I would not hesitate if it was needed. Maybe I don't need the lawyers because I KNOW what my rights are, and I do not allow others to violate them? I wish all of you the best in protecting your own rights.

I too would fight for my rights however I know many people who feel that it is just not worth the hassle, and walk away, to another dealer or company.

I will state that it can be time consuming and frustrating but in my opinion it is worth it as I hate getting ripped, so it becomes more personal than the buck

I think we ought to make a " Hammer Time " list of all the dealers that either don't know what they are doing or don't care about the customers. Then we could send the list to Yamaha so they can see what dealers are not doing their job to support Yamaha....

The dealers that tell you wheel bearings or fork seals aren't covered under warranty are full of bovine scatology. I don't understand why, but some dealers just don't want to do warranty work. I recently asked my dealer to replace the chrome trim that fits at the bottom of the windshield and he did. He said anything less than $750.00 he can get covered under warranty without even asking yamaha. I'd get another dealer.

Brad, I completely agree with you. In fact, I have no problem anytime someone decides they do not want to have their bike repaired, for ANY reason. It's their bike and their decision. I suppose not trusting the dealer or not thinking it is worth the effort are just as valid as any other reason.

But I DO have a problem with misinformation. I really think it is wrong for someone to tell other members that these bikes do not have a warranty! And claiming Yamaha won't repair something like a wheel bearing is exactly the same thing as claiming the bike does not have a warranty. At least in the US the warranty terms are very clear, as are the legal remedies should the manufacturer or any of their representatives refuse to honor the printed terms of that warranty.

I looked at that warranty and it's very open to "interpretation" favouring Yamaha (as many warranties would be). Regarding the fork seals, what's considered normal life time of fork oil seals? If, hypothetically say 4 years is normal and they start leaking in the 5th year then that's beyond their normal life and may well not be warrantable. On the other hand, if they start leaking within the 4 years, then most likely defective and warrantable. In other words, if they start leaking after what's considered their normal lifetime, then they aren't defective, they are just worn out from normal wear and tear and therefore are not necessarilly covered under warranty.

hey, I don't work for Yamaha ( LOL ) ... just looking at it from a different perspective ... a perspective that may be used by a dealer.

Hmm, really? :confused07::confused07: I would think that would be the case with the antennas gettting rusted. If plated properly and installed properly, they shouldn't rust in less than a year IMHO.

I do work for a dealer (just not Yammie) and if the warranty statement does not list components specifically as excluded, then it IS covered. For instance our truck engines are covered for 24 months, unlimited mileage. But further down in the statement it specifically excludes the water pump SEAL after 150,000 miles. The rest of the water pump is covered for the 24 months.

So, IMHO if Yammie does not exclude (in your example) the fork seals after 4 years they are covered for the full 5 years.

Yes but I doubt they would fight that hard for few hundred bucks, little guy would win.
