beyeker Posted June 25, 2009 #1 Posted June 25, 2009 My 2007 Venture with 18,000 miles has developed a strange noise. Sounds like its coming from the motor. Not very loud. 5 or 6 times then quite, and then 5 or 6 times then quite, etc. The noise is a lite knock. Clutch in or out. When I raise the idle speed it's hard to hear, but I don't know if it's gone. At first I thought maybe a fuel pump noise, half clogged filter? I going to take it to a Dealer tomorrow, but I thought maybe someone else has had this.
mountainhorsega Posted June 25, 2009 #2 Posted June 25, 2009 Sounds like a little knock or bump. Took it to the dealer, he upped the idle a little bit which cleared it up. Don't know how warm it is where you are or how old you oil is but ours only seems to do it when it's REALLY warm out (above 92-95) and due for an oil change. Dealer said it was nothing to worry about. We'll see what everyone else here says.
beyeker Posted June 25, 2009 Author #3 Posted June 25, 2009 I changed the oil and then took a 2200 mile trip last week to the Smokey Mts and back. It has been warm and the oil has about 2400 on it now, I usually change it about every 4000 miles, three times a year, 10w-40 Valvoline Motorcycle Oil. I've had 5 Royal Stars and never noticed this noise before.
SteveW Posted June 25, 2009 #4 Posted June 25, 2009 I had a noise like that onmy 2005 when I got it used.Come to find out when the last owner ( or Shop ) changed the oil filter they caught the side of the AIS air box next to the oil filter and bend the cover down at the corner. It would puff exhaust and sound like a knock. I took the box off and fixed the lid cover. Noise gone almost sounded like a rattle in the exhaust pipe. Hope this helps, at least its something to check. Steve
SaltyDawg Posted June 25, 2009 #5 Posted June 25, 2009 I know you said it was there when the clutch was in or out, but is it less when the clutch is in? If so, that is normal from what I can tell, both of my RSV's did that. Scared me to death the first time I noticed it, but hey I have 98,000 miles on mine and it's still running strong.
beyeker Posted June 26, 2009 Author #6 Posted June 26, 2009 I drove my bike 50 miles to the dealer today. When I got there it wasn't making the noise. I then drove it 220 more miles the long way home. No more noise. One of the mysteries of life. Thanks for the help.
