I followed jlh3rd's and V7Goose's posts on the subject. FANTASTIC data and THANK YOU to both plus everyone that added to their posts with tips, tricks and improvements.

 

I started the project and have the 1/8" x 27 NPT TAP and the HELP! 42009 Spark Plug Non Fouler available to someone who needs it. (see V7GOOSE's post)

 

Neither "tool" is particularly hard to find or expensive but I'll never use either again and try to give back where possible. I am willing to ship it to someone who needs them. PM me if you need it, I'll even cover shipping. Send it to someone else when your done!?

 

Anyway: Everything is prepped on the gauges. Based on forum member tips:

- Went with Mechanical gauges

- Ordered 1/4" black ABS (from an eBay auction) to make my gauge bezel

- Bought auto hose to cover the oil line to prevent an exhaust pipe issue

 

I'll post a picture of the final product when done. In the meantime, if you're thinking about diving in, it was simple to get started:

Drill press comes in handy. Yep, Teflon tape b4 install.

I noticed you're using the compression washer for the water temp ... I couldn't get mine to not leak so I used a rubber O-ring. Didn't have to tighten it much at all ... no leaks so far and I've put on around 5,000 Km.

 

Also note you mentioned using rubber hose to run the oil line... great idea. I used a length of brake line ... was a bit difficult to thread down the inside of the frame but once installed, it sure is "permanent" and the flared ends prevent any damage to the oil line.

I just went to an auto parts supply store with the fitting in hand and matched something up.

I've had the original compression washer on the temp sender and bare nylon tube to the oil pressure (routed inside the existing clamps to hold it securely against the frame) for over 60,000 miles on my 05 with zero problems. There are already wires clamped to the frame tube on that side of the engine - all you need to do is snake the nylon tubing through the gaps next to the wires in the existing clamps, don't even need to take the clamps loose. Can't melt if you secure it and don't let it flop against the header pipe!

I agree ... but if you do.... lookie all that oil!! LMAO!

 

Should also mention that the coiled oil line is a whole lot easier to route down a hose or brake line tube than just the open frame. Seems those coiled lines just refuse to "un-coil" and for me was a real PITA to route first time around. ... and ... I believe it was due to that "un-coilability" which caused it to work it's way over too close to the header pipe and melt a hole.

 

As for the compression washer, no matter what I tried, that washer would not seat properly ... it would compress and squish out in an irregular oval and leak. I tried 2 of them and same thing ... yet with the O-ring, first try and it sealed and hasn't leaked yet. Maybe an brand/mfg issue here? (different mfg of compression washer ... yours/mine?)

Thx Guys. For peace of mind I'm going to get that little coiled up nylon tube through the brake hose! As for the washer on the water temp sensor, it's o-ring for me for now.

Gauges are in, mounted in 1/4" black ABS and flush with the fairing bezel. Oil line run, through the existing clamps but just below the plastic side cover under the tank it runs through brake hose the whole way down to the fitting. Fires it up and it works. 25# at idle up to 60# when revving.

 

Water temp probe, different story. First shot with compression washer (thought I'd try it) failed. Leaking. Off to get the O-Ring!

 

Also, pulled 12VDC from inside the fairing for the volt meter, a switched line I use for my Satellite and GPS power. Should I have taken it from another source?
