dynodon Posted June 17, 2009 #51 Posted June 17, 2009 I have a friend that has a nice bike, BMW, and it gets maybe 100 miles a year. He has a tailbone problem, but if he lays on the tank, can ride a little. Used to do 1000 mile days like it was a trip to the corner store. Hist first BMW looked brand new and had over 150,000 miles on it when his problem stopped his riding. I have friends that trailer to distant destinations and then ride a lot. Have friends that have bikes they COULD ride, but don't much. Like my first friend used to say at car shows, when people would tell him what THEY would do with his nice old cars if they had them...."Well, when YOUR name is on the title you can do what you want, till then, Shut up". Only he may not have been so nice about it! I used to have collector cars that I would trailer. Their worth was in their low mileage, also they were unrestored cars, so they couldn't just be fixed up. Once had a magazine hack tell me they gave an award for the best "restored" car because anyone could put a car in a garage for 30 years. Well, I sent him copies of letters from dozens of people that used pictures of my original that I let them take, to restore THEIR car better. Plus my car got some miles and you can't just let them sit for 30 years. Takes just as much effort to keep an original looking new, as it takes to keep a restored car looking new. Anyway, whatever floats your boat, as long as it doesn't infringe on my rights. Ride, don't ride, trailer or not. Just enjoy the bike (or old car, or boat or salt shaker collection).

I'm seriously thinking about trailering the scoot up to my daughter's in Idaho and then riding the last 300+ miles to Cody from there. These younger guys who are bad mouthing trailers, and talk macho.....just wait. you are right there. when i turned 60 i think someone turned my switch off. still trying to do the young stuff and my wheels just keep spinning. sure wish i would have took care of this old body. who would have ever thunk i would be this old. :cool10:
1sttenor Posted June 17, 2009 #53 Posted June 17, 2009 Trailering is a part of my life. Reason is, my wife doesnt like to ride much. I want to be with her on some of our weekend excursions, so I will trailer my bike to the place we are going for the weekend. Once there, I will get up early and ride off while my wife hits the stores and shops in that town / area. When I get home from riding, she always has a place in mind of where she would like to enjoy dinner. Off we go (in the cage) to dinner and spend the evening together enjoying each others company and other interests. Next morning I am off again on the bike enjoying what I like and later on in the day I will meet up again with my wife for another evening of shared interests. Trailering my bike is a must for me.....and if trailering my bike offends anyone, Im sorry, but I enjoy my wife and understand her feelings when it comes to riding my bike. I really enjoy sharing different interests with my wife. I tend to like to ride everywhere, but like Eck, I sometimes need to trailer. Later this summer I'll be trailering to Limon CO and ride in the state for a week. Riding across KS would probably keep her from going and I want to spend time with her. Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.
FreezyRider Posted June 17, 2009 #54 Posted June 17, 2009 i just realized, i break all the real biker rules. i have a very expensive 2007 zx-14 that sits in my work shop most of the time only 1300 miles on it. does it bother me? a little but i love to look at it. i trailer my bike when going any distance with my wife. does it bother me? yes, i hate loading it and unloading it. i hate to ride my new goldwing in the rain cuz it's so pretty when it's clean. does that bother me? not in the least. i ride the heck out of it when it's nice. i have a lowly v-twin v-star 1300 that i ride in the rain and very seldom clean it. does that bother me nope. i love riding it rain or shine. last but not least i ride a majesty girly scooter. for errands, and to work, rain or shine, before that i had a helix. i ride it when ever i don't feel like shifting and to beat the oil companies. i guess that knocks me out of being a real biker what ever that is. although i have rode almost 60,000 miles in the last 2 1/2 years on six different bikes. does that bother me? you bet wish i had the time and the weather to have gone 100,000 miles. what do i have to do to qualify to be a real biker? :rotf: Well, I know some people who would say that you need to grow a ponytail, cover your arms with tattoos, and only ride from bar to bar. Somehow I just don't see you covered in tattoos Bill!
Venturous Randy Posted June 17, 2009 #55 Posted June 17, 2009 Whenever we go to the Asheville rally, I ride the bike and Laura pulls the trailer with the camper on it with her car. I like having the trailer there so if anyone had a problem, it makes it a lot quicker to get them help. And it helps carry a lot more STUFF than we otherwise use when we pull the camper with the bike. But one of the great things, like Eck mentioned, is it gives my wife an opportunity to do other things and not have to depend on me wanting to do what she wants to do. Last year she filled up her car with other ladies and did the antique search thing that I would rather go to the dentist than do. It is also nice to have a car there if we had bad weather and need to do a store run or whatever. We have also trailered the bike to the beach and rode while we were there. In that case, it does not feel so much like your vacation started until you get there, rather than it starting when you leave on the bike. RandyA

Somehow I just don't see you covered in tattoos Bill! love tattoos, just can't afford them. the ones i got cost $18.00 50 years ago. went to get one a couple of years ago and he told me $600.00. no more tattoos for me. glad you made it home okay.

Due to her bad back my wife can't ride far and we don't have a trailer so I will ride while she drives her van. That way she can take all the luggage she wants and shop while we are there. It works for us. We both get to the same place at the same time and are happy. She will ride with me once we are there.
edger Posted June 18, 2009 #61 Posted June 18, 2009 I am much luckier than some. I have no trailer, have no need for one. When we go on trips we ride cuz quite honestly my wife loves to ride every bit as much if not more than me (She doesn't ride her own, she is with me). I can see the use for a trailer and wish I had one just in case of a breakdown or such. I have to get my bike 50 miles to the nearest shop. They definately have their purpose. As for riding in the rain I HATE it, I have only had to ride in the rain twice in the past 7 months since I got the new bike cuz we got caught on trips. Otherwise if its raining I dont ride it. Before I got this couch (RSV) I had a much more uncomfortable bike and thought about trailering many times. Sure have nothing against someone who does. Just my thoughts and giving thanks for a wife that loves to ride!

I have only 28,000 on my 02 but it is hard to rack up mileage when you live on an island that is only 20 miles long by 5 wide and only has one main road end to end. I can, and do, get to Vancouver island and have covered it end to end. It takes two ferry rides and half a day just to get to the mainland.
OldBear Posted June 18, 2009 #63 Posted June 18, 2009 Only 1000 miles? Never a drop of rain? That's insane! Your not a biker if you don't ride in the rain. I just passed 80,000 miles on my '99 RSV this weekend. I also washed it for the second time this year. Well, more like rinsed the worst of the road crud and bugs off with a little soap and water. +1 on the 1000 miles and no rain. I picked up my venture last Friday and have been camping since Monday and I already have 350 miles on it AND have ridden it in the rain (Come to think of it, for the past 2 months on my FJR I don't think I ever got to ride WITHOUT being in the rain:cold:) Personally, I'd much rather ride 'em that polish 'em. Polishing seems a LOT like work....

friesman Posted June 18, 2009 #65 Posted June 18, 2009 What kills me is I see these enclosed trailers running around with Harley Davidson enblazened on the back and sides. I guess that says it all. My enclosed trailer has Yamaha tuning forks on the sides....., but last year i put on about 9000kms in 2/3rds of a season and have about 2500 kms on my scoot this year. Brian
