elguapo129 Posted June 15, 2009 #1 Posted June 15, 2009 Ok, just got my 84 venture yesterday. Been a vstar rider till now. I have no book on this bike and i'm kind of lost as to what/where everything is. Any suggestions on where I can go to read up? Also: My throttle is "sticky" and doesnt return to normal resting position on its own which is a "royale" (pardon the pun) pain. Any suggestions on adjustments for that? Thanks!! This site is awesome a
skydoc_17 Posted June 15, 2009 #2 Posted June 15, 2009 Hey Andrew, Welcome to the forum, and congrats on the "new to you " Venture Royale. Here is the link to the MKI maintainance and repair manual: http://labs.trunkful.com/vrmanuals/8385servicemanual.pdf Lots of good reading there, Now about that sticky throttle. If you open up the Run/Kill switch you will expose the ends of the throttle cables. I have had really good luck flooding the cables with WD40, or PB Blaster to free them up and then using a good throttle cable lube. I use the Belray which is a bit pricy but there are others on the market that will do a fine job. while you are in there use some CRC contact cleaner on the Run/Kill switch, these switches are known to be a problem with starting especially if they get wet from rain or a car wash (pressure washer). You will see the adjustment proceedure in the service manual for the throttle cables but try the clean-out and relube first. There is one rule here...we need to see pics of your scoot! Hope this helps, Earl
camos Posted June 15, 2009 #3 Posted June 15, 2009 Have you tried oiling the cables and the actuator mechanism? Initially try WD 40 up the cable from the carb end and unless the actuator is really gunked up some WD 40 might clean it up enough too. The effects of WD 40 don't last very long so apply a better grade of oil or lube. Good maintenance procedure is to oil all cables once a year using 30w engine oil.
Marcarl Posted June 15, 2009 #4 Posted June 15, 2009 1st gen manual download: http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=3384 Your sticky throttle could be a carb sync needed, or the cables need to be adjusted or lubbed or both, or one or the other cable maybe starting to fray. I would do a carb cleaning with Seafoam 1st, then do a sync, if that don't fix it then do a lub on the cables and lastly would be to change the cables because that means work,,, but it's all worth it,, you now have an awsome scooter.
elguapo129 Posted June 15, 2009 Author #5 Posted June 15, 2009 hey thanks for all the help. i will get on all that tomorrow. dude i got from said carbs have been "gone through" and synched. we'll see. however all the screw heads are clean so that might be a good sign. i will try the clean and lube thing first . thanks so much. i uploaded a few pics to an album on my profile. thanks again andrew

bongobobny Posted June 15, 2009 #7 Posted June 15, 2009 Sea Foam is a magic elixer that does wonders on cleaning out carbs, fuel systems, etc!! It is available at Auto Zone, Wally World, etc. It is like an industrial strength carb cleaner. There should be a website for them, try doing a gogle on Sea Foam products...

camos Posted June 15, 2009 #9 Posted June 15, 2009 When you find SeaFoam, make sure you get the gas treatment not the tranny treatment. The two kinda look the same but different if you can guess what I mean. Don't follow the instructions which are focused mostly on maintenance. Instead, put in 1/2 the can to a full tank of gas, run it out, put the other half in, fill up and run that out. Doesn't have to be done in one day but should not be left to sit for a month. If the bike hasn't been ridden for a while (Shed Queen) don't be too concerned about a lot of white smoke to begin with as that will clear up. When it comes to trouble shooting/fixing it is my policy to always do the easy stuff first.

Kandaje Posted June 15, 2009 #11 Posted June 15, 2009 Greetings... ....And then change your sparkplugs. If your fuel system is dirty, your plugs will definately get fouled as the Seafoam works it's magic. People often forget that step, and wonder why the Seafoam made it all worse...
bongobobny Posted June 15, 2009 #12 Posted June 15, 2009 Yah!! A thorough Seafoam job WILL gunk up a set of plugs if there is a lot of built up gunk in your fuel system!! While you are at it replace the wires and the screw in caps at the coil end as well! Chances are you still have ytour original wires...
Venturous Randy Posted June 15, 2009 #13 Posted June 15, 2009 Another thing to check on the sticky throttle is make sure your cable has not been pinched. Steve (SGN) had a problem with his throttle and found that where the cable comes around the tripple tree area, it had been pinched a long time ago in the steering stop. It had caused the rubber cover to be torn and the cable housing was rusted and it was bent. RandyA
