YAMADOG Posted June 12, 2009 #1 Posted June 12, 2009 Hello motorcycle brothers and sisters. Iam new to this forum so please be gentle. I own a 1998 royal star tour deluxe with 12,500 miles that i bought used last year. It has a shudder while shifting through the gears on hard acceleration and in od on moderate to heavy acceleration from 50 mph. The clutch is not slipping has plenty of power but shudder's,you can feel it in the seat and handle bars. Did not know if this is nature of the beast for that year or if i am having issues. It has done this from day one. Any help on this would fantastic or if anyone else has had this problem.
FreezyRider Posted June 12, 2009 #3 Posted June 12, 2009 WELCOME!!! Yep, just need to get those carbs sync'd and you'll be amazed at the difference. Joe
FreezyRider Posted June 12, 2009 #4 Posted June 12, 2009 HEY! I just noticed that you are in Indiana! Where are you located? I'd bet we could find someone close who could help you out with your sync job. Joe
YAMADOG Posted June 13, 2009 Author #5 Posted June 13, 2009 From kouts indiana just south of valparaiso. Carb sync really! Iam a auto mechanic and boy it sure feels like drivetrain. But i will for sure have it checked out. Where r u guys from
Carbon_One Posted June 13, 2009 #6 Posted June 13, 2009 Don't forget that these motors like to rev. If the rpm's are too low the bike will shudder as well. Larry

But i will for sure have it checked out. Where r u guys from I'm from Monroe, about 25 miles straight South of Fort Wayne. Up toward your area there are several members...Leadwolf56 is around Elkhart, several others in that general vicinity too. Joe
YAMADOG Posted June 13, 2009 Author #8 Posted June 13, 2009 Thats cool we will all have to get together sometime. I will check on getting carbs synced. Thanks for all your help i will keep u all posted.
jrcain32 Posted June 13, 2009 #9 Posted June 13, 2009 I agree with Carbon One. If you shift early and the revs are not what they should be it will shimmy somewhat. At times I still catch myself shifting into 5th too early...
YAMADOG Posted June 13, 2009 Author #10 Posted June 13, 2009 Its just worse when iam lugging engine. Still notice it when iam banging through the gears at high r's but not as pronounced. Another question-i noticed people saying 1st and 2nd generation what would my 98 rstd be 1st or 2nd generation
jrcain32 Posted June 13, 2009 #11 Posted June 13, 2009 One other thing... I tried higher octane (93) gas once and it caused it to spit and sputter for a few seconds when changing gears. I went back to 87 and it quit. Some experience this and some don't. My bike does not like the higher octane gas. You may not be running 93 but I just thought I would throw that in.

wes0778 Posted June 13, 2009 #13 Posted June 13, 2009 I ride a 1998 Tour Classic. Getting the carbs synced made a really different bike out of it. Check the vacuum port plugs, too. Get that done and run three or four tanks, (with 1/2 can of Seafoam in them), through it. Also if you are REALLY "getting after it", let it hit the rev limiter in all gears, or if you are not comfortable with that, don't shift out of first under 40, out of second before 60, out of third before 90. Forth and fifth you are on your own. See if that stops the studder you feel, on acceleration. Just for grins and giggles you might take a look at the air filter (a PITA) and spark plugs
YAMADOG Posted June 13, 2009 Author #14 Posted June 13, 2009 Weso778 i took it in today we will see when i get it back how it reacts thanks for everyones help
BuddyRich Posted June 13, 2009 #15 Posted June 13, 2009 50 mph you should just be getting ready to shift to third. Got a tach on it? Wind that thing out. Carb sync and at 4k the engine is just getting into its powerband and smooth as silk
Condor Posted June 14, 2009 #16 Posted June 14, 2009 Sounds like your permantly dropping a cylinder, but it only shows up under heavy loads. Could be a lot of things. Bad plug wire, plug, fuel starvation.....???
shmedly Posted June 27, 2009 #17 Posted June 27, 2009 Mine is brand new 2009 and I did that too. I was lugging it. Try shifting later and revving higher. That was it for me!
