Hello motorcycle brothers and sisters.

Iam new to this forum so please be gentle.

I own a 1998 royal star tour deluxe with 12,500 miles

that i bought used last year.

It has a shudder while shifting through the gears on

hard acceleration and in od on moderate to heavy

acceleration from 50 mph.

The clutch is not slipping has plenty of power but

shudder's,you can feel it in the seat and handle bars.

Did not know if this is nature of the beast for that year

or if i am having issues.

It has done this from day one.

Any help on this would fantastic or if anyone else has had

this problem.

I'm from Monroe, about 25 miles straight South of Fort Wayne.

Up toward your area there are several members...Leadwolf56 is around Elkhart, several others in that general vicinity too.

I agree with Carbon One. If you shift early and the revs are not what they should be it will shimmy somewhat. At times I still catch myself shifting into 5th too early...

Its just worse when iam lugging engine.

Still notice it when iam banging through

the gears at high r's but not as pronounced.

Another question-i noticed people saying 1st and 2nd generation

what would my 98 rstd be 1st or 2nd generation

One other thing...

I tried higher octane (93) gas once and it caused it to spit and sputter for a few seconds when changing gears. I went back to 87 and it quit. Some experience this and some don't. My bike does not like the higher octane gas. You may not be running 93 but I just thought I would throw that in.

2nd Gen. Take a look at the Venture History tab.

I ride a 1998 Tour Classic. Getting the carbs synced made a really different bike out of it. Check the vacuum port plugs, too. Get that done and run three or four tanks, (with 1/2 can of Seafoam in them), through it. Also if you are REALLY "getting after it", let it hit the rev limiter in all gears, or if you are not comfortable with that, don't shift out of first under 40, out of second before 60, out of third before 90. Forth and fifth :innocent: you are on your own. See if that stops the studder you feel, on acceleration.

Just for grins and giggles you might take a look at the air filter (a PITA) and spark plugs

50 mph you should just be getting ready to shift to third. Got a tach on it? Wind that thing out. Carb sync and at 4k the engine is just getting into its powerband and smooth as silk

Sounds like your permantly dropping a cylinder, but it only shows up under heavy loads. Could be a lot of things. Bad plug wire, plug, fuel starvation.....???
