DonWood Posted June 7, 2009 #1 Posted June 7, 2009 Hi All: Well, I think the fuse went on the cigarette lighter. I was using a pump to put air in the tires. It started to go then stopped. Pump works fine from my car lighter but will not work from the cycle. I understand from the manual that the fuse is under the cowl on the right side of the cycle as you are sitting on it. There are two screws (torx) and one on the bottom. I can't seem to break the two torx screws loose and didn't want to apply too much pressure for fear I would break something. Has anyone had to get into their fuse box on a 2009 Venture? I can always wait till I take it back for the 600 mile check and let them check it out, but it would be nice if I could replace a fuse Thanks in advance for the info.
V7Goose Posted June 7, 2009 #2 Posted June 7, 2009 First, you absolutely cannot use the front accessory plug in the fairing for an air pump. That circuit is only designed for a very small current (fused at 5A). If you just put a bigger fuse int here you have an excellent chance of melting wires and other calamities. As for access to the fuse box, that should be quite simple. But you talk about two torx screws . . . I have not personally looked at a 2009, but all current Royal Stars that I know of do not have any torx screws to remove the lower cowling. There are two allen head screws on the front of the cowling and one behind, just above where your toes would be. These screws are very easy to remove. There is also a fake plastic rivit in the middle of the two cowling panels, directly under the radiator. This just takes 1/4 turn with a Philips head to release the lock and let you pull it out. Goose Update: I did just look at a 2009 RSV "S", and the cowling screws are identical to all the other RSVs. They are allen, not torx. If that is what yours has, they should come loose relatively easy with any wrench - I personally like T-handles. As long as you have the correct size, nothing will be damanged by just turning them counterclockwise until the "pop" loose. If you are certain your bike hass torx screws, then maybe you are looking at something else? I'm not sure what that would be, since I don't think there are any torx screws on a current RSV other than the front rotor bolts and the throttle position sensor.
LilBeaver Posted June 7, 2009 #3 Posted June 7, 2009 Don: Presuming that your 2009 is the same as my 2001 [which I am pretty sure the mounting of these pieces are] there are 3 [4mm] hex head bolts and one plastic retainer that needs to come out for that piece to come off. (I replaced mine a few weeks ago, so this is what I remember anyways) The two silver colored ones on the front of the 'cowling' and on the backside [ie. the side that your right foot is by when you are riding -- just above the rear brake pedal] there is a small silver hex head bolt there that needs to come out [if I remember correctly]. Then on the bottom of the cowling, where the right and left sides join together under the radiator, there is a plastic 'push-in' retainer that needs to come out for the 'cowling' to come all of the way off. Once you get all of those pieces out, the plastic piece pulls right off and the fuse box is right there. As far as them being on there that tight, I do not know what to tell you -- since your bike is brand new [based on your 600 mile service comment] the only reason that would be locked in there so tight is the dingus at the dealer cranked it on too tight. The other option may be that they used the 'loc-tight' like they are supposed to on some parts, which may make it difficult to get out. If you do not have a good set of hex-head 'sockets' [i don't know if they are considered sockets or not, but that is where I found them in the tools anyways], that may be a wise purchase for future work on the bike since many parts are held on with these hex-head bolts. I got a metric set from sears last time they went on sale for about $20. This also allows one to torque these parts properly upon reassembly if you choose to do so. Hope that helps! Rick M.
