footsie Posted June 6, 2009 #1 Posted June 6, 2009 I am venting here, I just bought a 2004 venture, and one of the harley guys asked me when I was going to move up. I told him I was not ready for a Goldwing yet. Then he said, No I mean up to a harley, to which I replied, that going down, not up. I get tired of that attitude that I are ridding something less than they are because I don't ride a harley. It use to be a joke, but I have began to take it personally. just venting Gregg
Hulk Posted June 6, 2009 #2 Posted June 6, 2009 Right with ya Gregg:happy65:, when it comes down to it I'll ride with anyone with two wheels (even three) rain or shine, day or night and am always willing to take a shot as a joke but don't take one at my pride and joy.
pegscraper Posted June 6, 2009 #3 Posted June 6, 2009 It does get old. It's almost enough to make me want a sport touring bike simply because HD doesn't make any that style. The argument would not exist.
loehring Posted June 6, 2009 #4 Posted June 6, 2009 I wouldn't let it get to you. They pay twice as much for half the bike. That's justice in itself. I have a close friend who rides a Road King. I have NEVER let him live down the day we had to trailer it home. I now refer to it as his Trailer King. He's trying to sell it to "move up" to an Ultra Classic. I asked him why he wanted an Ultra Fixit. I have a set of Baron 4-2-4 pipes on my RSMV. He says it sounds more like a NASCAR than a bike. We rag eachother constantly but it's all in good fun. Wing riders think only a Wing is a great bike. Harley riders think only a Harley and BMW riders think only a Beemer. Regardless of what they ride, a true biker understands that the bike you ride is personal and it just doesn't matter. It's all about the ride. If they're joking around, who cares. If they're serious, pitty them because they just don't get it.
Wanderer Posted June 6, 2009 #5 Posted June 6, 2009 I never met a bike, I didn't like, but the riders are some times something else.
cowpuc Posted June 7, 2009 #6 Posted June 7, 2009 I never met a bike, I didn't like, but the riders are some times something else. ^^WORD^^ Funny,,,, I enjoy my old Heathkit Booney Bike as much as I do my 69 Santee Chop.. Only way I may differ from Wanderer on this one is that I also LOVE playing with the minds built on ego - needling peoples what I do hahaha.. You just gotta learn to appreciate how deeply affected with materialism we all can be - then you can start having fun with it.... Of course the mostest fun of all is being on two-wheels of any kind at any time,, than all those little hurt feelings just disappear and you find it doesnt matter of all... 'Puc
JerryK Posted June 7, 2009 #7 Posted June 7, 2009 I agree with the tired of it....but it's funny when most of the guys that knock Jap or any none Harley used to ride our brands! I always answer the question with 'Why do you think you have to have a Harley to be a Biker.....I ride with some Harley friend often and his 2 Harleys do well and so does my Venture.....But some fools just don't get it.....A RIDER OF ANY BRAND IS MY FRIEND......just some want to be's get on my nerves.......:Venture:Jerry K
waterbug Posted June 7, 2009 #8 Posted June 7, 2009 It gets old after awhile, I personaly dont care what anyone rides as long as they enjoy it and have a good time who cares what it is? Every brand out there makes some good bike and some bad bikes its just those that are in to the HD thing really heavy look down on those who dont for some reason. enjoy what you have no matter what it is and dont let them get to you.
Owen Posted June 7, 2009 #9 Posted June 7, 2009 I usually just tell them 'my other bike is a Road King, but its in the shop'. Most of them never get my point.
wes0778 Posted June 7, 2009 #10 Posted June 7, 2009 I enjoy the looks :think:I get from folks when I answer the "It looks like a Harley" :smile5:comment with NO:no-no-no:, the Harleys look like my YAMAHA!!!
Yammer Dan Posted June 7, 2009 #11 Posted June 7, 2009 My last Harley was a 56 Pan chopper.Be worth from 30 to 50k now. I got tired of sitting beside the road waiting for someone to come and get me.....
Skid Posted June 7, 2009 #12 Posted June 7, 2009 Just ride with them a short while and they will see why you are riding a Yamaha... When you're not the one broke down on the side of the road, oryou blow one of them off the road one time, they'll understand..... but all that chrome is pretty setting along the road.....just glad it's not my bike.
RedRider Posted June 7, 2009 #14 Posted June 7, 2009 'I injured my elbow, now I can only ride. Polishing chrome in front of the bar hurts too much.' RR
Snaggletooth Posted June 7, 2009 #15 Posted June 7, 2009 The company I work for just hired a new local driver. I nailed him for a rider the second I saw him. Vest, boots, chain drive billfold. He's an older fella, a few years on me anyway and he saw me getting ready to take off on my VR. He came over and chatted for a couple of minutes and he whips out a handful of photos of his bike. He has an older and excellent looking fatboy. Every pic had the bike with his golden retreiver laying in front of it. I looked at all the pics and handed them back and said "That's a beautiful dog! What kind of bike is that?" The look on his face was priceless. He was almost stammering. He finally got it when he realized I was having trouble keeping a straight face. Looks like we might be riding together pretty soon. He's a rider. Not a brand clone and even better, he actually knew what my bike was.
ToRide1 Posted June 7, 2009 #16 Posted June 7, 2009 There always a few snobs that think the only bike to own is a Harley and to each there own and if they want a Harley they will find a way to get it. I have seen very few people with a Harley that did not have to do a lot of up keep & expensive repair's, the price of ownship is to high. You can always tell its a Harley by the way they are pushing it.
Squeeze Posted June 7, 2009 #17 Posted June 7, 2009 I usually just tell them 'my other bike is a Road King, but its in the shop'. Most of them never get my point. That's a good One !!! :bluesbrother::bluesbrother::missingtooth::crackup:
SLOW HAND Posted June 7, 2009 #18 Posted June 7, 2009 I missed out on one heck of a deal on a Harley before finding my venture . Booked for 12k was for sell for 8k finaly just wanted payoff 4K! I was the second caller . Found my bike a couple of weeks later at a good price , it was what I wanted to start with but would have loved seeing my brothers face when I doubled my money on the Harley & upgraded to my Venture .
Snarley Bill Posted June 7, 2009 #19 Posted June 7, 2009 never really cared much about what harley riders think about me. i haven't got time to worry about it. there are aholes on all brands. a harley rider is just another person out there doing there thing. if i form opinions on them, and bash them, i figure im no better than the ones doing it to me. so i just ride and get along with all of them. got some good friends on harleys and i never ever say nothing but good things about their ride no matter what i think, and they give me the same curtesy. the harley thing will go on forever and i just avoid being a part of it.
FROG MAN Posted June 7, 2009 #20 Posted June 7, 2009 For many it's status, pier pressure, and keeping up with the Jone's.Identity and to be socially accepted means more to them then the riding experience. Not knocking Harley's just the mindset of some people. Many just can't ride against the wind. Not all are like this and many will ride with anybody. The staff at the oberlin Inn told us yesterday how friendly the venture riders were my point exactly.
Guest seuadr Posted June 7, 2009 #21 Posted June 7, 2009 There always a few snobs that think the only bike to own is a Harley and to each there own and if they want a Harley they will find a way to get it. I have seen very few people with a Harley that did not have to do a lot of up keep & expensive repair's, the price of ownship is to high. You can always tell its a Harley by the way they are pushing it. this is totally true. where i live is alot of farming community, and there are alot of people who are less well off around here unfortunatly. I find a hard time feeling bad for someone with a beat up 30 year old trailer, 5 or 6 cars that don't run in the front yard, and 5 or 6 kids that run all over in the same yard when they have a brand new hog sitting in the driveway. priorities for some people are quite strange. of course, i am one of those "weirdos" that works on my own bike, bought it for 400 dollars and got it running on my own! the looks i get from hog owners when they start blabbing on about their awesome ride and how their oilchanges are tripple digits and i tell'em i do all my own work
YamaGeezer Posted June 7, 2009 #22 Posted June 7, 2009 If you listen closely, Harley riders even bad mouth their own. UC riders will make fun of someone riding a Sportster. They all speak badly of someone riding a V-Rod. I believe the attitudes appear when they buy the Harleys. Nice folks prior to that. Another reason I bought a Venture.
Beau-Kat Posted June 7, 2009 #23 Posted June 7, 2009 If you listen closely, Harley riders even bad mouth their own. UC riders will make fun of someone riding a Sportster. They all speak badly of someone riding a V-Rod. I believe the attitudes appear when they buy the Harleys. Nice folks prior to that. Another reason I bought a Venture. Yup. I agree with that. I have a friend whose attitude really changed when he bought a Road King (upgrade from a Honda 250 Rebel). We used to everything together. Now, we rarely do anything together. But, he is not an example of my other Harley friends. I and they swap our bikes around and enjoy the rides. Smiling all the time! When I bought my (used) Sportster, my Road King friend asked me why I bought a girl's bike. This from a guy who who takes his bike 75 miles away to get it serviced. At least I can work on my own girl's bike when it needs it. And my Sportster doesn't sit covered up in my garage for months while the weather isn't perfect for riding. Interestingly, I enjoy my Sportster and have never had a minute's trouble with it. And that is the bike I usually let my friends ride. They have never complained, just glad to be riding something. The Sportster hasn't changed much over the years, but owners spend so much customizing them that slightly used stock parts abound on ebay. So, if it gets wrecked, I can easily find stock parts to fix it...myself. So why keep "My Harley" to myself. The fellowship of riding and sharing bikes is way more important than keeping something polished and covered. I'll keep my girl's bike for a while. It never complains about the Japanese bikes in my garage...or vice-versa. Complaining is just a people trait.
gibvel Posted June 7, 2009 #24 Posted June 7, 2009 He says it sounds more like a NASCAR than a bike. Hmmmm... sounds like a vehicle with incredible Horse power and speed... Why thank you!! And the down side to this would be?
bongobobny Posted June 7, 2009 #25 Posted June 7, 2009 Yah! I don't dislike Harleys but have never been a fan of the "Harley Mistique" either. It's not the ride, it's the rider that's the problem...
