I had a wild sound out of my 86 VR earlier in the year. I found the front of the drive shaft dry as a bone... problem solved!

That's where I would go looking, or check the splines in the pumpkin, but that should have been done when the tire was off.

If the noise quits when you lean forward, you can be sure the tire isn't the problem.

Suspension comes to mind since redistributing weight eliminates the noise.

Have you adjusted your CLASS.

Also, it would seem a heavy passenger should accentuate the noise & help diagnose the problem.

When replaceing the Pumpkin, and Axel nuts, Gradually apply torque to the 4 nuts, and the main axel nut, and during the process Tap the assembly with a plastic mallet to relieve any stress.

Before beginning the process, rotate the axel, and look for a position with least rotational drag.

I do this in a 4 step process of increasing the torque on the 5 nuts.

Also, when you get to about 1/2 of the required torque on the nuts, I start the engine, and let it spin the wheel

I once had a clicking noise, once each wheel rotation, and this process cured it. Never heard it again.

I could hear the noise at about 50MPH going down the road.
