StarFan Posted May 29, 2009 Share #1 Posted May 29, 2009 Hi all. Well I am finally home from Greenland and getting ready for my trip to USA - leaving on Monday. I was trying to insure my USA bike but since I do not have a USA drivers license then none of the bigger companies will offer me insurance for my bike. For a moment things were looking to be hopeless and I was thinking about renting a cage to be able to attend Maintenance day. But I lucked out (so to speak). I found a company in USA that insures bikes for travel through guys like me. They are called: www.motorcycleexpress.com. I called them and they sent me a form to fill out and send back to them. O.K. - had a look at the form and compared to our forms here in Iceland this is complicated to say the least. The minimum time for insurance is 30 days and I can live with that. But the total for that period will exceed 400 US$ at least if the form is filled out the way I did it. I can also swallow that but I am running out of time so to speak and need your help. I will attach the file here and please have a look and tell me how you guys would fill this out - that is what coverage to take. Note that I want to be on the safe side and take as full coverage as possible. Need to send this out this weekend so the insurance will be ready Tuesday. So please helo me with this one so I can ride up to BigToms and to Don´s place next week. Bike or cage,,,,,, Lookin g forward to meet you all ! All the best from Iceland, Jonas
SilvrT Posted May 29, 2009 Share #2 Posted May 29, 2009 A bit cornfuzink to me (but I'm from CanNuhDuh...eh) ... j/k One thing I notice tho ... the choice for UN-insured and UNder-insured motorist. Now, wouldn't a person who is UN-insured also be UNDER-insured?
StarFan Posted May 29, 2009 Author Share #3 Posted May 29, 2009 Yep SilverT. A person that is uninsured is underinsured. It is a little confusing but I do need help with filling this out so I can send it off and hopefully everything will work out fine. So - who´s the insurance specialist in the club
Yammer Dan Posted May 29, 2009 Share #4 Posted May 29, 2009 It seems pretty straight forward Jonas but Insurance and I don't get along. I'm sure some on here can help a lot more. Did I mention I hate Insurance companies?? Hope I get to meet you. Not sure if I'm going to make it but I'm trying.
RedRider Posted May 29, 2009 Share #5 Posted May 29, 2009 Are you bringing over your own bike? Or are you renting here? If you are renting, the rental agent will likely have insurance coverage available for you. RR

Don´t like em either Dan. But can´t ride without insurance can you! Gotta pull this through or the trip is only half fun driving in a cage. Still would come and meet you guys though since that is the main reason for this trip. The riding part is like a good dessert.
StarFan Posted May 29, 2009 Author Share #7 Posted May 29, 2009 Are you bringing over your own bike? Or are you renting here? RR I have my own bike in Woodstock NY. Gotta insure it and then register it. The registration part is no problem since the bike is in my name but the insurance is a pain. Progressive and Geico don´t want to insure international drivers unless they by some miracle have a USA drivers license (how likely is that?). Just tell them you swam the Rio Grande to get here and they will set you up. (OK, this is a little 'illegal alien' humor - not recommended to try if you are on an honest visa). skydoc_17 Posted May 30, 2009 Share #13 Posted May 30, 2009 Hey Jonas, To start I thought you said your bike is an 2005, 1300c.c bike. If this is correct then here is what I got: OptionIII- $247.00 2004 and newer $215.00 older $207.00 older Increased libility- $186.00 Medical Payments- $10.00 Page 2 Uninsured Motorest Coverage- Best $32.00 Worst $7.00 2005 Bike 1300c.c. best of everything, total $475.00 If bike is older " " " $443.00 In my honest opinion, the only place I can see for you to save a few bucks is in the Increased Liability area. This is "how much Damage are you going to do to someone else's stuff." You could save over $100.00 if you reduce the Increased Liability to 50/100/25 which unless your bike flies thru someone's livingroom window and their house explodes into a fireball you should be covered. I have seen VERY FEW motorcycle accidents where the bike did a lot of damage to the other person's property. Remember, Increased Liability only pays for the other guy, not you or your bike. Hope this helps, Earl
autopilot Posted May 30, 2009 Share #14 Posted May 30, 2009 I agree pretty much with Skydoc except your bike is a '98 I think. I would also get the underinsured coverage....you get a lot of young people that get bare minimum coverage and you don't want that to force you to have to go out of pocket if something did happen! There's 2 schools of thought on the amount of liability coverage. Go with as little as you feel comfortable with (some minimum amount) or go higher. The other insurance companies and/or lawyers will typically go after whatever the policy limits are, in the event of an accident. If the specifics of the accident give any ammo to the other side and they go after a large amount, guess where the rest of the money comes from after they go after policy limits?? You got it....your back pocket! I always have figured that since that's the way they do it......I'll carry enough liability coverage to make sure I've got MY insurance company's undivided attention and support in the event of a claim!!! they'll fight harder over 100k than they will over 10k, regardless of what they say publicly. I got people in insurance and legal that have told me exactly that. SO......Do whatever you feel comfortable doing is the best advice I can give you, buddy! Good luck, whatever you choose & be safe on the trip. By the way, you are the only guy I know that has a matched set of bikes. If that ain't cool, I don't know what is! That's my 2cents! Marcarl Posted May 30, 2009 Share #15 Posted May 30, 2009 Best I can figure from this and the cheapest way to go is not to take the collision, because you own your bike. If you loose it in a collision, do you want the insurance company to pay for it or not, is the $ 100.00 question. Option 1 Liability and Comprehension: 118.19 UN 32.00 UIN 17.00 Policy Fee 60.00 Credit Card Fee 4.89 TOTAL $232.08 Option 2 Liability,Comprehension, and Collision 220.00 UN 32.00 UIN 17.00 Policy Fee 60.00 Credit Card Fee 8.23 TOTAL $337.23 Am I missing something here?? I'm with Carl on this one I would go with option 2 just in the case. better to fill safe than sorry. That's only 70 euro difference. I guess thats fraction of motorcycle insurance compare to Europe. And make sure to have a copy of international DL. Did you check out who is coming from that direction, to Ohio ? you may hook up with other guys and ride together.
