KingSizer Posted August 28, 2007 #1 Posted August 28, 2007 I've got the windshield off and the headlight out and I can't even see the cable. Just about 1.7 million wires. Any suggestions? Does the big plastic piece that would be the top of the dash come out? and how? Thanks for any help...
93 venture Posted August 28, 2007 #2 Posted August 28, 2007 Hey Man Just Take The End Loose Down By The Wheel And Pull Out The Center Part Of The Cable You Dont Have To Remove The Jacket.
KingSizer Posted August 28, 2007 Author #3 Posted August 28, 2007 If I pull the cable out of the sheath and lube it will that get enough lube to the top end where the speedometer actually is? The whining this morning when it was cold was alot worse than normal, it is still working, but I think I am pushing my luck...
Venturous Randy Posted August 28, 2007 #4 Posted August 28, 2007 If you are going to do this right, I think you need to remove the entire dash, take the speedometer out of the dash and put grease down inside the speedometer where the cable comes thru. If you continue to ride it with it squealing, even intermittenly, you will distroy the speedometer. I have fixed several of these and this is the only way I have found that the fix works for a long period of time. Even now, if I have my dash out I will pull the speedometer and grease it. RandyA
GeorgeS Posted August 28, 2007 #5 Posted August 28, 2007 Just pull the cable out the bottom of sheath, and apply greese the entire length. If you follow the sheath up behind the light assembly, you can remove it with a long nose pliers. If you do not remove the Inst panel, you can squirt some light lube oil where the inner cable slides into the speedo assembly.
KingSizer Posted August 28, 2007 Author #6 Posted August 28, 2007 Thanks for the advice so far. I've got the dash all tore apart, there was no way my big hands were going to fit up thru the headlight. Those two screws on each side of the dash made it slide back real easy. I hope to lube it and put it all together when I get home from work today. It just got too late and too dark to really see what I was doing last night. Thanks again for the tips...
GeorgeS Posted August 28, 2007 #7 Posted August 28, 2007 As long as you got the Dash out, good time to Replace all the little dash light bulbs, I think there 6 of them. Also, on one of the Boards there are some diodes, do a resolder job on these, They are notorious for causing False Warning lights to come on. My head light warning has started blinking, I will have to do this myself.

Does the big plastic piece that would be the top of the dash come out? and how? Thanks for any help... i had the speedo 'moan' on my '83 last summer. Only did it on cold mornings. I found success in lubing it by removing the cable from the sheath and then holding the wheel end of the cover above the level of the dash, slightly filling it with a mix of WD40 and Super Lube, and using compressed air to get it up into the speedo. It worked, but I'm sure dumb luck had a lot to do with it. When i swapped out the dash panal for a cleaner unit the first thing I did was to make sure the newer speedo was properly lubed. BTW to remove the dash cover go in through the signal lights with a long phillips screwdriver to loosen the two side screws. Once the cover is off it's fairly easy to get to the cable.
Gearhead Posted August 28, 2007 #9 Posted August 28, 2007 Condor, using the compressed-air method I would be afraid of spraying oil on the backside of the lens, etc, creating a cosmetic mess. This did not happen? Did you use short bursts of shop air? Thanks, Jeremy
Condor Posted August 28, 2007 #10 Posted August 28, 2007 This did not happen? Did you use short bursts of shop air? Thanks, Jeremy Short burps is exactely what I did Jeremy. No overspray, but like I said it might have been dumb luck... I think after I posted this 'technique' the last time, GeorgeS, who was tearing apart speedo's at the time, couldn't see any reason why overspray would occur...but that's just hearsay.... since i've never had the time, inclinatiion, or curiosity to tear into one.

dkaiser Posted April 6, 2008 #12 Posted April 6, 2008 I just took my 1st gen for a little ride up the road. There was a squeal/growl when I got us the about 45 I think. It was about 55 degrees out. I'm pretty sure it came from the speedometer, so I am going to take it apart and lube it. I have WD-40 of course, but I also have a spray can of Amsoil Multi-purpose Spray grease. I use it to lube my locking hubs on my 4X4. I'm thinkint this would be good. What do you all think? D

D In my opinion if you want the lube job to last longer than 5 miniutes use anything but WD-40 unless you use it as a carrier for something more substantial like Super Lube. Just my worth.
