SteveW Posted May 27, 2009 Posted May 27, 2009 Well I got this bike used with 19,000 miles on it. I never felt it had the power in 4 and 5th gear that my 99 had. Now since I have the sidecar on it I thought that its just the extra weight and I'll live with it. The dealership I got it from wasn't any help. I decided to change out the #3 coil ( right rear ) since it seems to get the most heat and that is the one that most of you have had trouble with. I got a used set off of ebay and switched out #3 ( which is a pain if you have big hands ). Anyway the bike runs like it has never run before. It runs like a new bike with plenty of power. I can even put it in 5th at 50 without any lugging down. It seems like a bad design to put the rear coils where they did with all the heat and road dirt and water. They are going to send my old coil in for warrenty so I will at least have a new one if this one gives out. Much more fun to ride with all 4 cyl. working :dancefool::dancefool:
GeorgeS Posted May 28, 2009 Posted May 28, 2009 (edited) After reading several posting concerning failed Ignition Coils on 2nd gen bikes. And, don't recall seeing any, coils reported actually failed, on 1st gen bikes. Question comes up ??? Can 1st gen coils be mounted on the 2nd gen bikes. And of course would this be a wise thing to do. Remember, its pretty hard to tell if only one cylinder on these engines is not running correctly. Due to reported history, there must be some quality control problem with the 2nd gen coils. Just a thought --- Edited May 28, 2009 by GeorgeS
flb_78 Posted May 28, 2009 Posted May 28, 2009 Im beginning to wonder if Im firing on all cylinders. That could explain my gas mileage.
whozleft Posted May 28, 2009 Posted May 28, 2009 Is there a way to test or check to make sure the coils are doing their job?
