Just got my new '09 RSV last friday. Love the bike, even with th e few small delivery/set-up issues (Missing passenger intercom cable/connector)!! It's a real upgrade from the VTX I also own. I'm looking forward to "meeting" all of you here on the forum, and hopefully in the real world as well.

Here's the question. I've seen a few threads that refer to "passing Lamps." I assume those are the same thing Honda riders call "Highway Lights." The small, but very bright additional lights on the front of the bike either above or below the turn signals. If I've got that right, let me ask...

Are these something I should try and install myself, or is it better left to the service dept. to do for me. Also, with the Honda, a modification was necessary to allow these lamps to work with the Headlamp operating in High-beam mode. Is this true with th RSV as well?

Waiting to hear from you all.

Anybody close to me in North Texas?

Thanks in advance.

first off,,,:BLUE:

as for the lights I would put them on yourself.

it's not that hard.

as for the high beam thing mine stay on , on high or low.

I would get the spacer for the light bracket . that way the lights aren't so close to the faring.

These are what you're hearing about. I have a switch to turn them on and off but I just leave them on. They aren't connected to the high beam at all.

(Sorry, it won't let me upload the pic.)

Welcome, I have a switch to turn the passing lamps on/off, but leave them on all the time. I wired them off the ignition switch but thru a relay. Look in the tech section and you will find a wiring diagram.

I am in Denton, so not far from you.

Welcome to the site..I am sure you will really enjoy this place....so much information shared here it will make your head spin. Rules say you need to post photos or the shiny new bike...we cannot wait to see it. WE all hope you get many smiles and many miles out of it...I am sure you will.

IF you have any mechanical ablity at all and a little bit of electrical...you should be able to install these yourself. I would not let the dealer install nothing on my bike. You will have to remove windshield and split the fairing. Wire up the lights to either the high beams or low beams the choice is yours. I like mine on the low beams with a switch to run them on high beams if needed. Most here recommend installing a relay to handle the load and pick up power straight from battery (if you do this you may need to pull the tank to run the wires to the battery)...this keeps the extra load off the key switch which some has had fail and we think this accelerates key switch failure.

IT is not that big of a deal...there are shop manuals here that show all the wiring diagrams so you will know what you are hooking into...high beam or low beam...and lots of post on how to split the fairing.

You may want to search some of the post on the passing lights...and see some install different lights than what comes with the Venture passing light kit...some use some other Vstar or Road star lights that look better and are brighter. I am not real sure about this.

Again welcome to the site...we are all family here...you included.

Welcome Troy! I'm in Colleyville - love to help you out. Bring the bike on over and we can hook up the lights and talk all about the bike and some things you might want to keep an eye on. I'm retired, so available most days - just give me a shout. Ride safe,

Hope to meet you! Do the lights yourself or with a bud! Something satisfying about self installs.
