Ok folks. My '04 RSV has a bad decel backfire. Just changed collectors on both sides without fixing it. Also had AIS removed by Snarly Bill. Took it to the shop to look over, they said they didn't find anything to cause it. No exhaust leak (they say) only offered carb sync as a possible solution. Going to maint day so will have that taken care of then. The caps on the carbs look ok far as I can tell. Those who know me, know I am almost the most non-mechanical person here. Looked at all the other threads for backfire too. So anyone bold enough too step up at maint day and see if they can cure the beast? Or at least give me new ideas. Other than the explosive backfire, she runs great, gets excellent mileage, but does occasionally have a gas odor. This makes me think It's getting too much in there and blowing up on decel. But again, I really have no clue and don't want to mess with the carbs by myself. The challenge is out there! :stickpoke: See you at Don's!

I'm betting the carb sync will fix your backfires. :)

Probably!

I don't like the "smell of gas" thing though.

After a few "adult beverages" I'm sure they will get it fixed at Maintenance Day one way or the other.

Quit slowing down.

The first gens arn't going to be able to keep up no matter how much you slow down.:stirthepot:

One other thing never let a winger dude work on your baby.:buttkick:

I was afraid letting Bill work on it but the things you do to keep those old guys happy! :innocent-emoticon:

Sound like a partially stuck Floater Valve to me, or the Air Jets in the Carbs are clogged somewhat and therefore the Bike is running rich.

Uhhhh OK. I am a mechanical idiot. I did run a couple cans of seafoam through this spring. Is the Floater Valve something I would even want to try to check without assist? I also had the thought that the choke (enricher) may not be fully closing but seems ok to me too. Not sure how to tell though.

Well, I'm not on to embarrassing you, but i think other than dismounting the Carbs, a bit more Experience in Carb Work would be a good Thing. Not to forget, after working on the Carbs, a Carb Balancing Job is necessary.

No need to worry about embarrassment. I know my limits, and readily admit it. Looks like I will be having some fun at maint. day.

A carb sync would be the first thing I would do. You probably don't have major carb problems or your fuel mileage would be down. You could check the spark plugs they should be dark brown and all look the same.

The smell of gas could just as likely be poor mixture. At MD, do a ColorTune and then a CarbTune. I expect this will take care of both problems. It did mine.

I'm sure hoping you guys are right. The carb synch should help. She runs so well right now I can't imagine it getting better. Almost worth putting up with the backfire! Just hate scaring everyone around me :yikes:

I have a 2007 RSV that does the same thing. I found that any gas with ethanol in it will make my bike backfire. The only other thing I found was to be sure that your idle rpm is not to low. I can't answer as to why this happens but it does.

Unfortunately, all of our gas has 10% ethanol in it. The idle RPM seems to be ok or maybe even high but without a tach that's purely a guess.

All I can say is that a stock RSV properly set up will not have an afterfire (popping on deceleration). Ethanol in the gas does NOT cause the problem, but it might make it worse if something else is wrong. Fixing the problem is usually pretty easy. Unfortunately, once someone has started taking things off, disabling the pollution controls, or otherwise modifying the intake and exhaust systems, all bets are off. Sorry you are having the problem.
