Kregerdoodle Posted May 22, 2009 #1 Posted May 22, 2009 I noticed yesterday, that when I take off from a stop, there is a popping sound from the rear, or sounds like the rear any way. the sound is almost like if you hold 2 pipes together end for end and then make them pop apart..I plan on checking it out real good this week end, in between all my honey do`s..... could this be the rear splines that I am hearing?? Thanks,

Thanks, Sound like the famous dry drive pins in the rear end. Mine made that noise at 700 miles. You could hear it also when backing into a parking place. Pretty easy to fix just have to remove the rear wheel and thier are lots of post here on exactly what to do about it. Put it on a jack and roll the back wheel and see if the sound is coming from the rear wheel. you need to get that resolved...riding season is apon us.
Eck Posted May 22, 2009 #3 Posted May 22, 2009 The way your explaining the sound it only does it on take off not on decel..which I would think eliminates your exhaust and carb sync. You may have a worn rear wheel bearing where some of the ball bearings are flattened and when you take off they "SNAP" as they try to roll in the wheel bearing race. Could also be worn Swing arm bearings and the swing arm is "flopping/ snapping" from the torque on take off.. Could be a loose muffler bracket and the muffler is hitting the rear frame just under one of the saddle bags. Could be your rear caliper is loose..and snapping back into place and by luck it hasn't "grabbed" thus locking the rear brakes up.. Could be a loose rear axle..check to see if the pinch bolt is loose and the axle nut is tight.
Kregerdoodle Posted May 22, 2009 Author #4 Posted May 22, 2009 Thanks, I will check all of these, It only has 17k on it, so I couldn`t see the swing arm being worn , but there is no telling. I thought about the brakes, as it does sound like brake pads slapping together... Kregerdoodle Posted June 20, 2009 Author #9 Posted June 20, 2009 Went to Jberrel`s home today and he helped me take it apart, showed me how to get to the spines and greesed it all up real good, got rid of most of the noise I was hearing, I did notice that after about 14k miles my wear markers are showing on my avon, so I will be getting a new rear tire soon.... at that time I will pull the drive shaft and see whats going on there..A big thanks to Jim for the use of the carport, Cabon 1 lift brace and the schoolin ya gave me!! Wish ya`ll could go this next week end but a 40yr anaversary pretty much out weighs riding a few hundred miles for lunch!! Congrats and ya`ll do something fun!! Kreg
