Bobby G Posted May 25, 2009 #26 Posted May 25, 2009 I run 89 gas in my '99 RSV, fill to the same level all the time, and consistently get 43 - 45 mpg when riding solo around town. Just came off a 435 mile trip this weekend, but had my better half on the back (she elected to leave the Harley home - sore back. I wonder why??? ), and the milage dropped to 36 - 38. That also includes a lot of mountain riding and high rpm speeds, and heavier then usual bags. Not too much by way of flat, high speed terrain. All in all, I'm not totally unhappy with that result. I run K&N air filters, Sampson pipes, did not rejet, softened the air pressure in the Metzlers to 36 front and 38 rear, and have not done any carb or color tuning in years. If you can't get to at least 40mpg after some of the suggested fixes, it might be time for some expert intervention.
Seaking Posted May 27, 2009 #27 Posted May 27, 2009 hi guys, back from my trip.. From Halifax NS to Waterville ME for the night, then to Boston, up to the "Hampdens" to see bikinis.. wow and hot weather, and then up to Freeport, back down to Portsmouth, across to Manchester, up to Merideth, overnight in Gorham after freezing through the White Mountain pass east side of Mt Washington.. brrrr (Town and Country Inn was FAB with jacuzzi and steam room after that frigid ride lol) A total of 1550 miles in all.. my gosh, I know people who don't come close to putting that on their bikes all summer long! lol What I can tell you about my riding habits and my bike's mileage was an eye opener to say the least.. ride it like ya stole it will get me 39 MPG while driving like Miss Daisy though the mountains at 40 to 60 mph gets me 46 MPG.. Big enough difference to get you on average an additional 20 to 25 miles out of a tank, I think.. 160 miles compared to 180 miles before fill up. A few more tuning, new plugs, clean filters out and so on will sort out the rest I believe.. I guess the gist of the story is that I'm prolly riding my RSV like I ride my customised VStar.. like I stole it.. ahem.. OK.. point taken
Yamastretch Posted May 27, 2009 Author #28 Posted May 27, 2009 If he did actually re-jet it, I would bet that is the problem. No re-jetting is necessary when adding the Road King mufflers or any other slipon mufflers for that matter. Also check to make sure that the carb boots are seated properly on top of the carbs, they can lip up and you will suck air. Hi Freebird, Is it hard to rejet it back to stock? Stretch
Freebird Posted May 27, 2009 #29 Posted May 27, 2009 Well...I wouldn't say that it's hard but it is time consuming. The carbs have to be removed to do it.
Yamastretch Posted June 4, 2009 Author #30 Posted June 4, 2009 I want to rejet from the stage 3 kit my friend put on when he owned the bike and go back to the stock jets. Is there a kit I can buy to do this or do I have to purchase each individual jet seperately? Where is a good place to purchase them? Is all I need to do this the 4 main jets and the pilot jet? Thank you again all.
1BigDog Posted June 4, 2009 #31 Posted June 4, 2009 Hey Salty, I tried a tank of regular and the bike seemed to respond much better then before. Maybe the colortune did it. Doug....yamastretch, if you make it up to Jax I can sync those carbs for ya after you finish rejetting them, or before you rejet them to see if you really need rejetting. Too bad I cant colortune them, it really makes a big difference.
Yamastretch Posted June 5, 2009 Author #32 Posted June 5, 2009 I want to rejet from the stage 3 kit my friend put on when he owned the bike and go back to the stock jets. Ruffy, According to some of the other posts, I think I need to rejet as the Stage 3 kit my friend put on was overkill.
1BigDog Posted June 5, 2009 #33 Posted June 5, 2009 Didnt realize it was already rejetted. Id say that was overkill. Sync offer still stands though.
KiteSquid Posted June 5, 2009 #34 Posted June 5, 2009 Where is a good place to purchase them? Is all I need to do this the 4 main jets and the pilot jet? Did your friend thow away the old jets or are they in a box in his garage?????????
