Cougar Posted May 22, 2009 #1 Posted May 22, 2009 Hi gang, I have a neighbor that stopped by yesterday and asked me if I wanted to buy is old goldwing, For the past 5 years I kinda have seen it parked in his garage and always told him that you need to ride that thing to keep the dust off of it. It has 42K on it and he say the carbs leak but starts, I see that it is in good shape , so ask how much?? He say's (5) I think and say $5,000.00 ??? He say's nope $500.00, my Question is how much are these going for these days? I am sure 500 is a pretty good deal and might pick it up this week to restore it a little , won't take much. but was wondering are the carbs on that year hard to work on? Carb's leak a little when running... What do you guys think? Thanks for any input. Jeff
Holly Posted May 22, 2009 #3 Posted May 22, 2009 Guy at work sold his non running wing for over 500.00. Major engine work to be done, was early 80's. Ton of miles on it, nothing special. Should resell well.

Send me his name, phone number, and address (could you also include a printed map to his house?) and I will go there and teach him a lesson for ya. In the meantime, please make sure he doesn't attempt to sell it to anyone else either before I can get there to pick it up .......... I mean teach him a lesson! Seriously, jump on that deal and don't give it a second thought! I tried to buy one last year that was a garage queen for 10 years. Carbs were disassembled, pieces missing, wiring needed done.....and the guy wouldn't take less than $750 for it. Sounds like this one is a BARGAIN!!! Joe

I now have to say to the wife HEY this is a real bargain! (keep posting so I can show the posts to her *lol*) She will look at me funny and say why do we need another bike? we just spent a million dollars on a trike conversion) where we gunna put it? ( i am already working on that) Not sure if I want to sell it or not... Like to use it for the old back roads and stuff. I sold a old Honda 350 about 7 years ago for $550.00 and I still regret it. was in perfect shape , I love restoring old Honda's. anyways I will keep you guys up-dated on this. I still don't have to OK yet. Jeff
Schlepporello Posted May 23, 2009 #8 Posted May 23, 2009 Don't know if you knew this or not, and forgive me if you do. I've heard that the Gold Wings use timing belts, not chains. And they have a tendency to crack and dry out, especially on older bikes. If you lose a belt, you lose an engine. Play it safe and replace the belts when you get it home.

Freebird Posted May 23, 2009 #11 Posted May 23, 2009 Now the STATOR...that is a different issue. Not sure if the '81 was involved or not but stator failure was fairly common on some of the old Wings and required pulling the engine to change. Again, not sure it this applies to the '81 or not.

It is now stored in a mini storage, I will take some pics and post them. maybe he will take 400 for it? *lol* Just what I need is more winter projects! The wife (still is giving me that look) ya know that look right? I think she is OK with it. IF I sell it for a profit later, but If I do this work I would love to keep it. I have one of those, great bikes, a little underpowered I think but jump on it.Someone mentioned the timing belt and it would be a very good idea to change that,if it goes the engine goes.Mine has 110,000 on it and still runs strong,other than routine maint. I've never had to do anything to it. Arthur

Jeff I've never has to work on the carbs but from what I understand it's not that easy. Freebird mentioned stator problems,the 82-85(I think) had this,most of the time if there is a charging problem it can be found in a burned out plug that runs alongside the battery,it's a 3 wire plug that burns out and it's best to cut out the plug and splice the wires together. (you are my best friend now) *LOL* No I haven't done it yet,it was replaced just before I bought it(5-6 yrs ago),but I have the belt and a special wrench made to take the cover off without having to remove the radiator ect... someday I will have to do that. Schlepporello Posted May 23, 2009 #21 Posted May 23, 2009 The Interstate was the one that was all dressed out. Back in the early years, a dressed out Wing was an option. Also, the stator problem was most prevalent on the '84. And as for the timing belt changing, I've heard it's not that bad, and as was mentioned before, mark your pulley positions BEFORE you remove the old belts. These are all things I learned while I was searching for a Gold Wing. I had joined one of those Gold Wing forums to get all of my info while I was looking. One of them had a VERY detailed post concerning the timing belt replacement. Several members on that board had a yearly ritual of changing the belts before the new riding season started. It wasn't that it was neccessary, it was that they didn't want to run the risk of a failure while they were far from home. As I mentioned before, if you lose a belt on a Gold Wing, you've just trashed the motor.

Also going to remove the (Vetter parts) and bring it back to the standard look as well. (might leave the front fairing , not sure yet) looking for a headlight to put into the spot when the vetter fairing was put on.. I guess they put a plug into the original head light housing.

Sylvester Posted May 31, 2009 #24 Posted May 31, 2009 I purchased an 81 Goldwing in April for $600 (I didn't know anything about them). Brakes were frozen up. I rebuilt the calipers and all was well. Wife told me one MC was all I was allowed so I put the Wing in Craigs list. I had numerous calls and sold it for $2600. I found out since that I sold it too cheap.
