halfwitt Posted May 21, 2009 #1 Posted May 21, 2009 Long before I had ever heard of "The Dragon", there was "The Crest". I rode Angeles Crest Highway on my Yamaha 400 and in my Triumph Spitfire. We used to say we were going "flying". Truly one of the great roads I have ever ridden. It is reopened now after being washed out by floods a few years ago. I would love to get back there one day an enjoy the ride again! http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-crest19-2009may19,0,6585700.story
Yammer Dan Posted May 21, 2009 #2 Posted May 21, 2009 Looks like a good one. Little far for Sunday afternoon.
Condor Posted May 21, 2009 #3 Posted May 21, 2009 It's been a millinium since I drove over that stretch of road. Never on a bike... didn't own one..., but in recent history, back before it closed due to slides, the reports of accidents were quite frequent. With a couple of billion crotch-rockets living in close vacinity it was 'use at your own risk'. I wonder, now that it's open again, when the carnage will begin??
halfwitt Posted May 21, 2009 Author #4 Posted May 21, 2009 I suspect the carnage will begin today! I grew up in that area. My brother and a group of guys he rode with made the front page of the local paper one day back in about 1980. The Highway Patrol was upset because these guys would out run them. There was a photo of my brothers group flying around a corner. My brother told me that they came around a corner once and a CHiP was standing in the middle of the road with his gun drawn. They blew past him. I had visions of Barney Fife stomping his feet and yelling at them to stop. But anyway, it is a dangerous road for cars and bikes. If you don't know the road you could easily find yourself down a 100' cliff.

The road was closed just a ways past Newcombs bar and resturant. The bikes always kept it open, only stopping when the snow closed the road.
Venturous Randy Posted May 21, 2009 #6 Posted May 21, 2009 I hope it goes well, but my biggest fear around here with the Dragon and several other popular riding roads is the other bikes. It is hard to enjoy the road when the next curve may have a crotch rocket and rider sliding on the pavement at you at 50mph. And this is on heavily patrolled roads. RandyA
GeorgeS Posted May 21, 2009 #7 Posted May 21, 2009 I rode it once back in 1959 I think it was. But on a work day, never on a weekend. However, 2 weeks ago I did the next best thing, I rode, Big Tjunga Canyon and Little Tjunga Canyon , and Aliso Canyon ( I think it was ) ON a 97 FLH-- now that was a work out !!!! A great Day it was !!!
