minnmac Posted May 18, 2009 #1 Posted May 18, 2009 although i am never lost and never have to stop and ask where the nearest hotel is at 11pm when the wife quit talking to me an hour earlier i still started looking at gps units for the bike. i was thinking of garmin but the waterproof models are a little spendy. i wouldn,t mind getting the cheaper models but can,t find a waterproof mount for them. anybody come across any aftermarket bike mounts that could work. my wife thanks you. al
BoomerCPO Posted May 18, 2009 #3 Posted May 18, 2009 A clear Zip-Loc bag will make any GPS waterproof............. Boomer.........who stays out of the rain and away from Bikini Car Washes too.....

capn eddie Posted May 18, 2009 #6 Posted May 18, 2009 Check out This one. Waterproof and voice navigation. I Use to hookup GPS to AUX input nad have that chick talk to me. Very good unit last forever. http://magellan.factoryoutletstore.com/cat/1778/Magellan-Bargain-Outlet.html + I bought a magellan 2200 t from this site for $104.00 then got a hard wire cable off ebay and then mounted it with an old mount i had from an old cell phone. Works very well . I also found bike mounts and traffic kits on ebay for it as well. Like you i didn't want to spend the cash for the garmin units and this works good for me and is waterproof.
BigBoyinMS Posted May 18, 2009 #7 Posted May 18, 2009 I see a lot of people using the Garmin StreetPilot 2720. When it was a new model it was $900 but you can buy refurbs for less that $150 now. And they are waterproof. RamMount has the mounts.
midnightventure Posted May 19, 2009 #8 Posted May 19, 2009 A clear Zip-Loc bag will make any GPS waterproof............. Boomer.........who stays out of the rain and away from Bikini Car Washes too..... Ditto. I put a clip on it to keep it closed since it can't zip all the way.
BIG TOM Posted May 19, 2009 #9 Posted May 19, 2009 I see a lot of people using the Garmin StreetPilot 2720. When it was a new model it was $900 but you can buy refurbs for less that $150 now. And they are waterproof. RamMount has the mounts. www.refurb depot .com.....garmin 2720...cost me 139.00 if I recall correctly....they are waterproof acording to Garmin...they just don't advertise that...lot of other great stuff too..I buy from them all the time.....refurb dosn't meen refurb they way most people think...large stores over supply, then often send items back...they cant be resold as new...thus refurb...
Sleeperhawk Posted May 19, 2009 #10 Posted May 19, 2009 A clear Zip-Loc bag will make any GPS waterproof............. Boomer.........who stays out of the rain and away from Bikini Car Washes too..... I have the Zumo 550, but even though it is water proof, I still put the bag zip lock bag over it. Has saved me from bugs, mud and water.
loehring Posted May 19, 2009 #11 Posted May 19, 2009 I have the Zumo 550 as well and I love it. For me it has been worth every penny. I admit it isn't the cheapest but I have had outstanding customer support from Garmin and the unit has been through some of the heaviest rains I've ever seen and had no issues. I ride 365 so having the GPS, XM Radio, MP3 along with traffic and weather alerts all in one waterproof unit made it worth it. Make sure what ever you buy does what you want it to do. Even $100 is too much to spend for something you end up not using because it doesn't do what you want.
Drew Posted May 19, 2009 #12 Posted May 19, 2009 I have an after market plastic cover for my iphone to make it water proof. I use the AUX for ipod function and I can get those important emails too! I can also use my jawbone 2 in my helmet to get my calls. I use a clip for it to mount it. I tried using my TOM TOM but the mount I bought from RAM broke because it was too tall.
minnmac Posted May 19, 2009 Author #13 Posted May 19, 2009 i guess i have some more research to do. thanks for more ideas than just where i was looking
BOO Posted May 19, 2009 #14 Posted May 19, 2009 Yep, Yep, nothing better than a baggy and a rubber band. Good Luck, BOO
Condor Posted May 20, 2009 #15 Posted May 20, 2009 Although a zip-loc will do the trick for waterproofing, the biggest problem you'll run into is finding something that you can read in direct sunlight without a screen cover. There are only a few LCD screens that won't wash out when the sun hits them, and that's just about all day long on a motorcycle. And something that has a nighttime mode. Otherwise the brightness of the screen will really cut down on your night time vision. I have a couple of 'El Cheepos'. The oldest's programing is very good, and the second has text to speach and seems a little better when it comes to sunlight, but the thing doesn't show your current speed...yet has a speedlimit warning feature... Grrr!! One of these days I'll find a Zumo 550 cheep....
Kross Kountry Posted May 20, 2009 #16 Posted May 20, 2009 Garmin Nuvi 500, about $400, easy use, no frills, with a very good touch screen. I wouldn't trade mine for any other model. And did I say weather proof. Garmin sells a mount just for motorcycles, about 28 bucks.
400thumper Posted May 20, 2009 #17 Posted May 20, 2009 I have the Garmin 255W, works great. Sam's $169.00. The ziplock really does work great.
