Rode my bike to work today and when I got to work, I couldn't get the trunk open but a few inches. It seems something went wrong with the trunk lid prop. I am now considering removing it. Has anyone removed the stock trunk lid prop and what did you replace it with...if anything?

I had issues with mine sticking....the screws out of the "hinge" area had backed out, and were jamming the mechanism. Hopefully yours is nothing worse than that, but I'm pretty sure you'll find that is what it is.

Guess I should clarify further, the screws in the lid "prop mechanism" hinge....right where it flexes...not a very good description, too early in the morning I guess. Right at the "bend" in the mechanism....get a good light and you should be able to see what I mean. Sorry for the crude assistance, can't explain any better at the moment.

Took mine off and never put it back on. No problems. With it off you can open the lid a little more making it easier to put things in.

One caution if you remove the lid support. If you let the lid up with weight on it (if you have a trunk rack) the back rest can break the speaker grill. Mine has been off for 8yrs. Rod

Removed the trunk mechanism last year and don't miss it one bit. One less piece of junk to deal with IMHO...........

Boomer.....with a trunk that opens and closes easily now.......and knows the 1st Genners will jump on this.:hihi:

I can't remember who did it, but there is a member either from here or the other venture site, who replace it with gas shocks like on a car hood. It required cutting and drilling some aluminum angle but it worked pretty darn good. If I remember correctly he had to do it on both sides in order to not tweak the lid when closing.

I imagine your problem is like what was mentioned above, I had roughly the same thing happen to me. Now I just make sure to check the bolts every month or so. I use the same time to tighten the bolts holding the trunk on.

I took my hinge completely off, and left it off.

Only problem is on REAL windy days...a little more pressure put on the hinges but boy can I get to every inch of the trunk.

I went out at lunch to check it out and sure enough as mentioned, the screws had backed out causing it to bind. I unscrewed the prop from the lid and I was able to open the trunk lid all the way. Then I could get in there and see what was going on. I ended up taking it completely off and I too like it beter with the prop off. The prop seems a little light duty anyway. I'll be careful not to let to much tention get on the hinges. Thanks for the advise/warnings!

ya'll mention not being able to open the trunk lid "all the way" ... here's how far mine opens... does yours not open that far? I can't see needing it open any further than that.

Mine use to NOT open that far. As I took the prop off, I noticed that I could bolt the swivel part back on up side down and it would allow the trunk to open further. Or maybe it was installed up side down from the factory...I don't know. Hard to explain but it would let the trunk open farther if I mounted it up side down and it would still function just like before.
